Newtown football team goes undefeated in season dedicated to Sandy Hook
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 07:57 PM PST
By Richard Weizel MILFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - The Newtown, Connecticut, high school football team completed an undefeated regular season on Tuesday that players and coaches had dedicated to the victims of last December's massacre at the town's Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Newtown High School Nighthawks finished with a 12-0 record after a 42-7 win over archrival Masuk High School in neighboring Monroe, Connecticut. The players have worn a logo on their helmets with the number 26 to commemorate the 20 young children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary last December 14 by 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza in one of the worst school massacres in U.S. history. "Our players are hungry to win the championship to give everyone in town a great Christmas present and something to feel happy about a year after such a horrible tragedy," said Newtown High's head football coach, Steve George.

Cricket-No need for Ashes pow-wow over sledging: Lehmann
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 07:43 PM PST
(Adds Mitchell Johnson quotes) MELBOURNE, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Australia coach Darren Lehmann has no plans to meet Andy Flower to defuse any lingering tension from the spiteful first Ashes test in Brisbane and says the England team director needs to worry about his own players rather than his opponents. Australia thrashed the tourists by 381 runs at the Gabba but were criticised by British media and former England players for taking the on-field sledging too far. Australia batsman David Warner was condemned as "disrespectful" by England captain Alastair Cook and by Flower for publicly criticising Jonathan Trott's batting in Brisbane. "At the end of the day he's in control of the England cricket team and we've got to try and get the Ashes back.

Soccer-AFC, Oceania in talks over combining World Cup slots
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 05:39 PM PST
By Patrick Johnston KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Reuters) - The Asian and Oceania football confederations have opened discussions about combining World Cup slots to improve their qualification chances at future tournaments, AFC President Sheikh Salman said. Both regions suffered heavy defeats in the intercontinental playoffs for the 2014 World Cup last week with Oceania champions New Zealand thrashed 9-3 over two legs by Mexico, while the AFC's Jordan were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Uruguay. Australia made the move to the AFC in 2006, which increased Asia's World Cup places to four and a half, and AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa was open to incorporating the half slot from the OFC in some way.

Atheist group erects 'Good without God' billboards in California
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 05:38 PM PST
By Sharon Bernstein SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - As the Christmas season approaches in the United States, a group of non-believers in the California capital are planning to erect billboards explaining why they are atheists in hopes of bringing broader visibility to their lack of religious faith. The 55 billboards that will soon dot the Sacramento landscape will feature pictures of local residents and slogans such as "Good without God," and follow similar campaigns in other major U.S. cities in recent years. "Those of us who are free from religion, who work to keep dogma out of government, science, medicine and education, have a lot to offer society," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, which sponsored the ads. The billboards set to go up in Sacramento on the day after Thanksgiving are part of the increasingly loud arguments between many deeply religious Christians whose faith has informed U.S. conservative politics for a generation, and a vocal cohort of secular, often younger voters who want to keep religion out of public life.
