Marvell Technology's upbeat forecast boosts shares

Sehat Sutardja, Chairman and CEO of Marvell Technology Group, speaks at the Reuters Global Technology Summit New York(Reuters) - Chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd forecast results this quarter largely above analysts' expectations as it gained market share in hard-disk drive and flash storage businesses, sending its shares up 5 percent in trading after the bell. Marvell, whose chips are used for reading and writing data on hard-disk drives, said it expected adjusted profit of 14 cents, plus or minus 2 cents, per share on revenue of $700 million to $740 million in the first quarter. Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 13 cents per share on revenue of $710. ...

Facebook blocks access to NBC.com after reports site is infected

Facebook users were told "This link has been reported as abusive" on Thursday when they attempted to access the NBC.com website. Several security bloggers warned on Thursday that the site was infected with malicious software, advising computer users to avoid the site. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Business software maker Compuware Corp, which has rejected a $2.3 billion bid by an activist investor, is exploring a sale and talking to buyout firms to gauge takeover interest, four people familiar with the matter said. The Detroit-based company has held early talks with several large private equity firms, including Blackstone Group LP, TPG Capital LP and Golden Gate Capital, about a potential deal, the people said on Thursday. Since January 2012, France and Luxembourg have applied reduced value added tax (VAT) rates to the sale of e-books of 7 percent and 3 percent respectively. Under EU rules, governments can apply reduced VAT rates to a limited list of goods and services which includes books, but currently not e-books. ...

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that just under half of 853 respondents between the age of 18 and 29 thought Microsoft is cooler now than it was a year or two ago. The software maker, often derided in Silicon Valley for failing to dream up products that captivate a new generation of social media and mobile savvy consumers, managed to pip Facebook Inc in the survey - only 42 percent of young adults thought the world's largest social network is cooler now than in the past.
