The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it had approved Kadcyla, also known as ado-trastuzumab emtansine, for patients whose cancer cells contain increased amounts of a protein known as HER2. The drug's label will carry a boxed warning, the most serious possible, of the Kadcyla's potential to cause liver and heart damage or even death. ...

Herbalife recalls some Nutritional Shake Mix due to milk allergen

The company said in a statement that people with severe allergies to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume products containing milk proteins. Herbalife said there had been no reports to date of any illnesses or adverse health effects associated with the affected products and that it had notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. ...

Cochlear implants aid adults with hearing loss

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Cochlear implants can improve speech and quality of life in adults with severe hearing loss, according to a new analysis of past studies - and two implants seem to work better than one. The implants, which are surgically placed into and behind the ear, transmit sound directly to the auditory nerve. "Cochlear implantation is just a hugely beneficial procedure for the people who need it. It's almost like magic," said Dr. Pamela Roehm, an otolaryngologist from the NYU Langone Medical Center who wasn't involved in the new study. ...

Too many Americans still drink too much: study

New York (Reuters Health) - On any given day in the U.S., 18 percent of men and 11 percent of women drink more alcohol than federal dietary guidelines recommend, according to a new study that also finds 8 percent of men and 3 percent of women are full-fledged "heavy" drinkers. That still means the great majority of Americans stay within the advised limit of two drinks a day for men, and one for women. "And in fact, most adults don't drink at all on any given day. ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite past clinical trials demonstrating that exposure to pure oxygen can help stubborn wounds heal, a large new study of diabetes patients with severe foot ulcers finds no benefit from oxygen treatments and possibly some harm. Researchers following more than 6,000 diabetes patients receiving treatment for deep foot wounds found that patients who got oxygen-chamber treatments along with standard wound care were no more likely to heal and more than twice as likely to undergo amputations as those getting standard care alone. ...

The Gallup survey said employer-sponsored insurance, long a pillar of the $2.8-trillion U.S. healthcare system, covered just under 45 percent of U.S. adults last year, down from about 49 percent in 2008, when the economy was engulfed by recession. Ranbaxy to resume generic Lipitor production for U.S

(Reuters) - Indian generic drugmaker Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd said on Friday it will resume production of its version of Pfizer's cholesterol fighter Lipitor for sale in the United States after resolving the issues that led to a November recall. Ranbaxy in November recalled its atorvastatin from the U.S. market and stopped manufacturing the widely used cholesterol lowering medicine after the company discovered contamination with tiny glass particles in certain lots of 10 milligram, 20 mg and 40 mg doses of the drug. A first aid kit made by Johnson & Johnson for sale on a store shelf in Westminster(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday said it has notified healthcare professionals of a Class I recall, the most serious type, of an orthopedic device made by Johnson & Johnson. The device, called LPS Diaphyseal Sleeve, is used in reconstructive knee surgery. It was recalled because of the potential for fractures, the FDA said. The agency said it has received 10 reports of incidents in which the device has malfunctioned. The affected devices were manufactured by Depuy, J&J's orthopedic unit, from 2008 to July 20, 2012. ...
