Reuters - SUNNYVALE, California (Reuters) - Short lead times from manufacturing customers are making it tough to predict end demand for microchips and hard to say whether an inventory correction is bottoming out, the chief executive of Maxim Integrated Products said. Struggling economies in the United States and Europe have crimped demand for electronics and in recent months pushed many manufacturers to reduce high inventories of chips and other components. Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA's parent Deutsche Telekom have discussed options including forming a joint venture to pool the wireless operators' network assets if AT&T's proposed $39 billion plan to buy T-Mobile USA fails, the Wall Street Journal reported. Blackstone, Bain to lead Alibaba's bid for Yahoo: sources

photo(Reuters) - Private equity firms Blackstone Group and Bain Capital will lead a bid for the whole of Yahoo Inc after agreeing to team up with Alibaba Group, two people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The two buyout houses are eager to acquire Yahoo's core U.S. operations, one of these people said, adding that the composition of the consortium, which will also involve Japan's Softbank Corp, has not yet been formalized. Intel, Total Immersion working on augmented reality chipsets

Reuters - (Reuters) - Total Immersion, a pioneer in emerging field of augmented reality (AR), is working with Intel to bring AR features, like gesture recognition, into Intel's chipsets, an executive of the privately held firm said on Wednesday. Speaking at the Reuters Global Media Summit, Total Immersion's marketing chief Antoine Brachet said consumer acceptance will decide when products would reach the market, but he thinks this could happen in 2-3 years. Clearwire seen reaching Sprint funding deal

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters) - Clearwire Corp is expected to reach a funding agreement with Sprint Nextel at least by year-end and possibly in time for Clearwire's December 1 debt interest payment deadline, according to people following a standoff between the wireless service providers. Clearwire, majority owned by Sprint, is seeking almost $1 billion in new financing to keep operating and to pay for a network upgrade that is crucial for it to compete in the U.S. market for high-speed wireless services. ... Hackers jailbreak RIM's PlayBook

photoTORONTO (Reuters) - Three hackers say they have exploited a vulnerability in Research In Motion's PlayBook tablet to gain root access to the device, a claim that could damage the BlackBerry maker's hard-won reputation for security. Root access means a user has permission to alter any file or program on a device and can control hardware functions. In a response to queries, RIM said it is investigating the claim, and if a "jailbreak" is confirmed will release a patch to plug the hole. ...

AT&T, China Telecom agree to expand partnership

Reuters - (Reuters) - AT&T Inc and China Telecom Corp Ltd have agreed to expand their relationship in China and the United States and will look into supporting each other in other regions. AT&T said on Wednesday that the agreement would expand its services for business customers in China and that the companies would consider jointly developing services, including video conferencing and managed hosting. photo(Reuters) - AT&T Inc will struggle to find buyers for any asset sale big enough to salvage its $39 billion deal to buy T-Mobile USA, with most likely buyers Leap Wireless International Inc and MetroPCS Communications lacking the cash. AT&T is looking for ways to make the acquisition more palatable to the U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission which have raised objections over reduced competition and job losses.
