The four-times grand slam winner, who triumphed at Flushing Meadows in 2006, fired coach Jimmy Connors last week after just one match together. The 26-year-old world number three, who is suffering from inflammation in her right shoulder, said withdrawing from the year's final grand slam was "a really tough decision to make". ...

Baby circumcisions in U.S. hospitals decline over three decades

Johnson (Reuters) - The rate of circumcisions performed on newborn boys in U.S. hospitals dropped 6 percentage points over the last three decades, with an especially steep decline in Western states, according to U.S. government data released on Thursday. The national rate declined to 58.3 percent in 2010 from 64.5 percent in 1979, according to the report from the National Center for Health Statistics. The tally excludes many circumcisions, including those performed in other places such as religious institutions and those performed later in life. ...

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Tennis Australia chief executive Steve Wood will step down next month after eight years in the job and be replaced by Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley, the sporting body said on Thursday. Wood restructured Australia tennis to put it on a firm financial footing and oversaw the development of the Australian Open into one of the strongest tournaments in the world. While there was success in the women's game in his time in charge when Sam Stosur won the U.S. Open in 2011, Australia's long wait for another men's grand slam champion continues. ...

Atlanta Braves Heyward lies on the ground after being hit in the head by a pitch from New York Mets Niese during their MLB National League baseball game in New York(Reuters) - Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks with a broken jaw after being hit by a pitch from Mets starter Jon Niese in New York on Wednesday. With two outs in the sixth inning, former All-Star Heyward was struck by a 90 mph fastball and immediately fell to the ground amid groans from the crowd. Aug 21 (Sports Xchange) - Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was hit on the right jaw by a pitch during Wednesday afternoon's game against the New York Mets and was taken to a hospital for tests. Heyward was batting in the sixth inning when a 90 mph pitch from Mets left-hander Jonathan Niese came up and in and appeared to strike him below the ear flap on his helmet. He took a step and fell to the dirt at home plate. After remaining down for several minutes, Heyward was helped up and he left the field slowly.
