Warming gas levels hit 'troubling milestone'
Thu,31 May 2012 11:31 AM PDT
Associated Press -

In this image released by NOAA, Chris Carparelli, adjusts a glass flask that line the walls of an air sample processing room at NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo., Wednesday, May 30, 2012. Researchers at the lab measure the levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in air sent in weekly from sites that are part of an international cooperative air sampling network. The world's air has reached what scientists call a troubling new milestone for carbon dioxide, the main global warming pollution. Monitoring stations across the Arctic this spring are measuring more than 400 parts per million of the heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere. The number isn't quite a surprise, because it's been rising at an accelerating pace, having years ago blown by the 350 mark that many scientists say is the highest safe level for carbon dioxide. So far only the Arctic has reached that 400 level, but the rest of the world will soon follow. Hillary Clinton listens as Mohamed Kamel Amr answers a question during a joint news conference in WashingtonOSLO (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will assert U.S. interest in the Arctic, where the prospects for abundant oil, gas and new trade routes has been likened to a modern-day gold rush, when she visits the region on Saturday. As the sea ice recedes with climate change, huge oil and gas fields are adding vast amounts to global reserves, while sea passages are opening for longer periods each year and cutting thousands of miles off trade routes between Europe and Asia. ...

Is China poor? Key question at climate talks
Fri,25 May 2012 05:18 PM PDT
Associated Press -

FILE- Smoke billows from a chimney of a heating plant as the sun sets in Beijing in this file photo dated Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. U.N. climate talks being held in Bonn, Germany, are in gridlock Thursday May 24, 2012, as a rift between rich and poor countries risked undoing some of the advances made last year in the two-decade-long effort to control carbon emissions from fast-growing economies like China and India as well as developed industrialized nations that scientists say are overheating the planet.(AP Photo/Alexander F. Yuan, File)Another round of U.N. climate talks closed without resolving how to share the burden of curbing man-made global warming, mainly because countries don't agree on who is rich and who is poor.
