FDA says nanotech may need extra safety tests
Fri,20 Apr 2012 02:20 PM PDT
Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health regulators said consumer products that use nanotechnology may have unknown effects on the human body, and advised food and cosmetic companies to further study the safety of these tiny particles. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued two draft guidelines on Friday calling for more studies, putting, for now, much of the onus for safety on companies. The FDA also rejected a consumer group's petition from 2006 that urged a separate category of regulation for nanotechnology due to its "unique human health and environmental risks. ... Full Story

To match Feature USA-MARIJUANA/COLORADODENVER (Reuters) - At a Denver dispensary for medical marijuana, state inspector Mark Brown makes his usual checks, verifying that employees wear name-tag licenses and the video surveillance system works. The store is a laid-back place with a popcorn machine, a "Reefer Madness" movie poster and plenty of pot, sold both mixed into candy and as buds. Brown mingles with the staff, among them a tattooed man rolling joints in a side room. Fellow inspector Paul Schmidt, formerly an undercover agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration, checks on the facility's marijuana-growing operation. ...

Fatigue after early breast cancer often fades: study
Fri,20 Apr 2012 12:20 PM PDT
Reuters -

A breast cancer patient shows her pink ribbon during celebrations during International Breast Cancer Day at a hospital in LimaNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many people treated for cancer are worn out for a time, but new findings suggest that long-lasting fatigue may be less common than thought -- at least for women with early-stage breast cancer. The study, of 218 women treated for early breast cancer, found that almost one-third had "cancer-related fatigue" at the end of treatment. But far fewer -- six percent -- still had the problem a year later. That suggests for most women with the disease post-treatment fatigue will fade with some time, the researchers report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. ...

Vatican crackdown on U.S. nuns a long time brewing

Reuters - (Reuters) - When Pope John Paul II arrived in the United States in 1979, the president of the nation's most powerful organization of nuns met him with a challenge. In a bold welcoming address, Sister Theresa Kane called on the pope to include women "in all ministries of our church," including the priesthood. The pope sat silent, his expression stony. That moment did not change Vatican policy. But it unveiled growing tensions between the Vatican and American nuns. ... Full Story

Statins don't reduce melanoma risk: study
Fri,20 Apr 2012 11:36 AM PDT
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite earlier indications that people taking statins might have a reduced risk of developing melanoma, a large new study of women finds the popular cholesterol-lowering drugs do nothing to prevent the deadly skin cancer. "For primary prevention (of melanoma) I think we're putting the nail into the coffin of that theory," said Dr. Robert Dellavalle, chief of dermatology at the Denver VA Medical Center, who was not involved in the new research. Melanoma is the most lethal of the skin cancers, with 70,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. ... Full Story

Fish oil supplements don't help MS patients: study
Fri,20 Apr 2012 11:14 AM PDT
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many people with multiple sclerosis take fish oil pills with the hope of keeping neurological symptoms from getting worse, but a new study suggests the extra omega-3 fatty acids may not be doing them any good. Because there is no effective cure for the autoimmune disease, many patients have turned to supplements that are known to affect the immune system and inflammation -- and therefore could theoretically slow the progression of disease in the brain. But so far, evidence that a supplement-boosted diet can help people with MS has been lacking. ... Full Story
