| 58 arrested in Philippines over global 'sextortion' network: Interpol Thursday, May 01, 2014 09:06 PM PDT Fifty-eight people have been arrested in the Philippines for their involvement in a giant, global Internet "sextortion" network, local police and Interpol announced in a joint press conference on Friday. Victims in foreign countries have been lured by people in the Philippines into giving sexually explicit photos or videos about themselves online, then blackmailed for many thousands of dollars, the authorities said. "The scale of this extortion network is massive," the director of Interpol's Digital Crime Centre, Sanjay Virmani said. Philippine police chief Alan Purisima said the 58 people arrested would be charged over a range of crimes, including engaging in child pornography, extortion and using technologies to commit fraud. | Hundreds arrested in US crackdown on Latino gang Thursday, May 01, 2014 02:01 PM PDT More than 600 gang members and associates in 179 US cities were arrested in a month-long crackdown on a fast-growing Latino gang that also netted firearms and drugs, officials said Thursday. Project Southbound targeted the Surenos, also known as Sur 13, a transnational gang with roots in southern California implicated in murder, extortion, drug trafficking, prostitution and other crimes. Among those arrested was a 27-year-old in Texas wanted for murder in his native El Salvador and a San Francisco man accused of supplying large quantities of premium marijuana to Surenos members. Thomas Winkowski, of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said it was the biggest operation ever undertaken by ICE against the gang, which is known for its decentralized hierarchy and affinity to the Mexican underworld.
