They lead the first LPGA major of the year by one stroke from American Michelle Wie, who missed a golden birdie chance at her final hole, and are two in front of American Cristie Kerr and first round leader Shanshan Feng, of China.

F1 must accent positives of new era, says Symonds
Friday, Apr 04, 2014 04:24 PM PDT
By Alan Baldwin MANAMA (Reuters) - Formula One needs to focus on the positives of its new turbo era rather than talking itself down, Williams technical head Pat Symonds said on Friday. Speaking ahead of Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix, Symonds warned that criticism of the rule changes from within the sport risked a backlash similar to that faced by British jeweler Gerald Ratner in 1991. Symonds said Formula One should not follow that path. We've done something good and we should tell the world about it." Formula One ditched the old 2.4 liter V8 engines at the end of last season and replaced them with a new 1.6 liter V6 turbo power unit with systems harnessing exhaust gases and kinetic energy from the brakes.

Rehabilitating Woods could miss U.S. Open, say surgeons
Friday, Apr 04, 2014 03:59 PM PDT
PGA: WGC - Cadillac Championship-Final RoundBy Mark Lamport-Stokes (Reuters) - Tiger Woods could be sidelined from competitive golf for at least three months after undergoing back surgery, casting doubt over his participation in the June 12-15 U.S. Open, say several leading sports surgeons. The world number one, whose back pain surfaced last year and intensified this season, will miss the Masters next week for the first time in his career after being advised by his doctors on Monday to have a microdiscectomy in Park City, Utah. Woods, whose back problems forced him to retire from last month's Honda Classic before he skipped the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his traditional Masters warm-up event, has been told by his doctors that he will miss "several upcoming tournaments" during his rehabilitation. "In general, it takes six weeks for the soft tissues to heal, even from the microdiscectomy surgery," Michael Leighton, a surgeon at the Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute in Florida, told Reuters by telephone on Friday.

ESPN looks to score with cricket stateside
Friday, Apr 04, 2014 02:40 PM PDT
India's Virat Kohli celebrates after India won the semi final match against South Africa in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in DhakaESPN is hoping that a U.S. audience will warm up to another sport that uses a bat and a ball to score runs in innings but that isn't baseball: cricket. The No. 1 sports cable network, which is controlled by Walt Disney Co, has decided to air live cricket for the first time on one of its fully-distributed cable networks, ESPN2, which reaches a U.S. audience of 96 million homes. ESPN is experimenting to see if the sport can gain traction in the United States, where professional and college football are king while cricket, with its loyal but small fan base, is viewed as being on the fringe. ESPN, which is the main earnings driver of Disney, faces increased U.S. competition bidding for sports rights and for viewers with new entrants such as Fox Sports 1, so it is casting a wider eye on other sports.
