Lawsuit against NCAA over athlete pay headed for trial Friday, Apr 11, 2014 07:28 PM PDT By Dan Levine SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - U.S. college athletes will get a chance to prove in court that sports team members should be paid, after a federal judge on Friday rejected the National College Athletic Association's attempt to head off a trial in the widely watched case. U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken in Oakland, California, denied a request the NCAA made last year to decide the case in its favor before trial. The NCAA argued that the current system is justified because amateur status makes college athletics more popular and furthers competition. More than 20 current and former athletes sued, saying that players should share in the profits of college athletics, a highly lucrative business in which universities reap billions of dollars from men's football and basketball. A Minute With: Football's Arian Foster on acting and NFL draft Friday, Apr 11, 2014 06:35 PM PDT By Eric Kelsey LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Houston Texans running back Arian Foster tests his Hollywood acting skills on the big screen as a college football player waiting for his name to be called at the annual NFL draft in the film "Draft Day," which opens in U.S. theaters on Friday. Foster, 27, a three-time Pro Bowl selection in his five-year pro career, is one of the sport's noted underdog success stories, having been passed over in the 2009 draft after playing at the University of Tennessee. Foster spoke with Reuters alongside his "Draft Day" co-star, Terry Crews, who played briefly in the NFL before turning to acting. Together they talked about the career transition for NFL players once they leave the game, the draft and their beefs with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA, now facing pressure from athletes wanting to unionize. Young contender Spieth minding his mentor at Masters Friday, Apr 11, 2014 06:34 PM PDT By Larry Fine AUGUSTA, Georgia (Reuters) - Precocious Jordan Spieth is minding his mentor Ben Crenshaw, keeping his emotions under control and staying patient in the thick of the hunt at the midway point of the Masters. Playing his first Masters, the 20-year-old Spieth shot 71 in Thursday's opening round then went one better on Friday when the wind howled across the Augusta National pines, to tie for third place at three-under 141, four shots behind leader Bubba Watson. "Mr. Crenshaw says it best, the Masters brings out emotion in guys that aren't emotional," Spieth told reporters. My caddie (Michael Greller) has been doing a great job of keeping me calm, level headed, and focused on bogey as the worst score." Spieth, who eagled the par-five 15th to jump up the leaderboard, is one the leading lights of golf's new generation. Full Story | Top |

First-round leader Haas slips down leaderboard Friday, Apr 11, 2014 05:47 PM PDT By Larry Fine AUGUSTA, Georgia (Reuters) - First-round leader Bill Haas went backwards with one of his shots and on the leaderboard in the second round of the Masters on Friday, stumbling to a 78 to stand nine shots off the pace. Haas, who led the field after his opening 68, had seven bogeys along with a double-bogey at the 11th, where his tee shot nestled against a tree on the left side and he was forced to hit the ball backhanded into the fairway. The bad break on one of the toughest holes at Augusta National accelerated a downward that put him at two-over 146, a long way back from 36-hole leader Bubba Watson, the 2012 champion. "When it was in the air I thought it was going to be in the left rough," said Haas, whose great uncle Bob Goalby won the 1968 Masters and whose father Jay Haas competed in 22 of them.
