DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. We recently spent a romantic night at a hotel, complete with dinner, drinks -- the whole shebang -- that he organized. I know he was a little stressed about money because he mentioned it. He asked if I could shell out some money, which I did, and when the bill came, he asked me if I could shell out some more. I was a little upset because I wasn't planning on spending that much. He says he is going to pay me back some of it, and now I just feel bad. ...

Across the Black Sea peninsula, some 800 heroin addicts and other needle-drug users take part in methadone programs, seen as an important part of efforts to curb HIV infections by taking the patients away from hypodermic needles that can spread the AIDS-causing virus. After Russia's annexation of Crimea methadone was banned. The ban could undermine years of efforts to reduce the spread of AIDS in Crimea. (AP Photo/Pavel Golovkin)SEVASTOPOL, Crimea (AP) — Every morning, Sergei Kislov takes the bus to the rundown outskirts of this port city for the methadone doses that keep him off heroin without suffering withdrawal. Your Political Leaders Are Unsurprisingly Terrible at Empathizing with Your SalaryDemocratic Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia wants you to know that, at $174,000 a year, members of Congress are underpaid. Because Jim Moran, like others, doesn't understand actual economic hardship and, frankly, isn't that great at politics either. Larry Schwartz is secretary to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a position that's a sort of like chief of staff in the state. After all, middle class folks like those making $500,000 shouldn't pay exorbitant taxes.

Workers assemble a Blue Fin 21 automatic Underwater Vehicle, an autonomous sonar mapping device, which will be towed behind the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield during search operations for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, March 30, 2014Perth (Australia) (AFP) - A US Navy "black box" detector made its much-anticipated debut in the oceanic hunt for flight MH370 on Friday but Australia's search chief warned it was crunch time with the box's signal set to expire soon. As the extensive search wore on, Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he believed the country's long-ruling regime was concealing information on the crisis, saying "the government knows more than us." The Australian naval vessel Ocean Shield arrived with a "towed pinger locator" capable of homing in on signals from the black box, as 14 planes scoured the remote Indian Ocean search area for signs of a crash site. Angus Houston, Australia's former military chief and now coordinator of the eight-nation search, said "we're now getting pretty close to the time when it might expire."

McDonald's quits Crimea as fears of trade clash grow
Friday, Apr 04, 2014 11:22 AM PDT
A woman makes her way under a barrier tape outside a McDonald's restaurant, which was earlier closed for clients, in the Crimean city of SimferopolBy Natalia Zinets KIEV (Reuters) - McDonald's announced on Friday it had closed its restaurants in Crimea, prompting fears of a backlash as a prominent Moscow politician called for all the U.S. fast food chain's outlets in Russia to be shut. Crimea's annexation by Russia, which Ukraine and the West do not acknowledge, has worried companies with assets in the Black Sea peninsula as it is unclear how the change may impact their business. While McDonald's did not mention the political situation in its statement, its decision to leave the region is likely to be seen as emblematic of the rift in Western-Russian relations, now at their lowest ebb since the end of the Cold War. "Due to operational reasons beyond our control, McDonald's has taken the decision to temporarily close our three restaurants in Simferopol, Sevastopol and Yalta," a spokeswoman said.
