'Jesus's Wife' papyrus fragment not a forgery, scientists say Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 01:32 PM PDT Scientists who examined a controversial fragment of papyrus written in Egyptian Coptic in which Jesus speaks of his wife concluded in papers published on Thursday that the papyrus and ink are probably ancient and not a modern forgery. The existence of the fragment, known as the "Gospel of Jesus's Wife," was made public at an academic conference in 2012. It is seen by some as a glimpse of how ancient Christians thought while decried by others, including the Vatican, as an absurd fake. Scientific studies performed over the last two years at various universities suggest both the ink and the papyrus are probably no newer than the 9th century and that the language and writing style are authentic for the period. Group of deputies wants Gorbachev investigated over Soviet break-up Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 05:45 AM PDT By Gabriela Baczynska MOSCOW (Reuters) - A small group of lawmakers have asked Russia's top prosecutor to investigate whether the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, should face treason charges over his role in the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev dismissed the request as an act of publicity-seeking and said there were no grounds to charge him. It follows a surge of patriotism since Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine last month, which has revived nostalgia among some Russians for the Soviet Union and boosted President Vladimir Putin's popularity ratings. The seven-page request for an investigation says Gorbachev and other senior Soviet officials violated the law and the will of the people by letting the republics that made up the Soviet Union declare independence and break away. U.S. accuses Russia after Putin warning on gas supplies to Europe Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 07:21 PM PDT By Alexei Anishchuk and Bill Trott MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin warned on Thursday that Russian gas supplies to Europe could be disrupted if Moscow cuts the flow to Ukraine over unpaid bills, drawing a U.S. accusation that it is using energy "as a tool of coercion". In a letter to the leaders of 18 European countries, Putin made clear that his patience would run out over Kiev's $2.2 billion gas debt to Russia unless a solution could be brokered urgently. Russia has nearly doubled the gas price it charges Ukraine, whose economy is in crisis, since pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovich was overthrown two months ago. Full Story | Top |

Scott Brown shouldn’t worry about being called a carpetbagger Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 02:30 AM PDT The real reason modern politics so often seems to surprise those of us who practice or follow it closely isn't because we lack for reams of granular data culled from the research of political scientists, or because we're locked away in Washington and have no idea what's going on in the rest of the country. It's because we apply the wrong context to the question. Full Story | Top |

Russia and West trade gas, sanctions threats over Ukraine Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 02:58 PM PDT Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Russia warned Europe Thursday its gas supplies would be in peril unless it helped pay Ukrainian debts, while the US threatened Moscow with more sanctions in a further escalation of the crisis over Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin's most direct warning about Russian gas deliveries -- vital to the health of the European Union economy -- came as Ukraine faced a new secession crisis and relations between Moscow and the West plumbed new post-Cold War lows. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew countered the threat to halt gas deliveries by telling Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that Washington would hit Moscow with a new round of sanctions if it "continues to escalate" the situation in Ukraine. Ukraine's embattled leaders, scrambling to hold their splintered country together after Russia's annexation of Crimea, offered amnesty Thursday to pro-Russian separatists occupying eastern state buildings if they laid down their arms and halted a four-day seige. Prosecutor tells Pistorius: 'Your version is a lie' Thursday, Apr 10, 2014 01:36 PM PDT By Ed Cropley PRETORIA (Reuters) - A South African prosecutor accused Oscar Pistorius on Thursday of lying and altering his story when the Olympic and Paralympic athlete described the night he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year. The double amputee sprinter, once revered across the world for his triumph over physical adversity, faces life in prison if convicted in the Pretoria High Court of the murder of Steenkamp, a 29-year-old law graduate and model. Pistorius, known as 'Blade Runner' due to the prosthetics he wears on the track, says he shot Steenkamp in a tragic accident, firing at what he thought was an intruder hiding behind a toilet door in his luxury Pretoria home on February 14 last year. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel, whose reputation as one of South Africa's toughest attorneys has earned him the nickname 'The Pitbull', cross-examined Pistorius while looking through photographs of the couple's bedroom taken after the shooting.
