"Yes, at times, this reform has been contentious and confusing and obviously it's had a share of critics," Obama told a crowd in the White House Rose Garden. Obama, who has seen the early hopeful euphoria of his presidency drained by a fierce partisan battle with Republicans in Congress, insisted that the law, for which he has paid a heavy political price, had cut costs and widened access. Massive 8.2 earthquake off Chile coast sparks tsunami
Tuesday, Apr 01, 2014 09:25 PM PDT
Residents in Chile's Iquique stand in the street following a tsunami alert after a 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the Pacific coast on April 1, 2014By Anthony Esposito and Rosalba O'Brien SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami, causing landslides that blocked highways and leading to five deaths. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was shallow at 12.5 miles below the seabed and struck about 100 km northwest of the mining port of Iquique near the Peruvian border. The government said it had no reports of significant damage to coastal areas, but around 300 prisoners took advantage of the confusion and escaped from a female penitentiary in Iquique, Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said. About 16 of the women were soon recaptured, Chile's investigative police said, while security forces fanned out through the area amid reports of power outages.

An Israeli woman holds signs in front of pictures of Israelis who were killed by Palestinians militants near a protest tent against the release of Palestinian prisoners in front of the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem, on April 1, 2014Israel and the Palestinians announced moves that could scuttle peace talks, prompting US Secretary of State John Kerry to call off a second visit in as many days aimed at saving them. Earlier in the day, Kerry had wrapped up a lightning visit to Israel, planning to return to the region on Wednesday in hopes of convincing the Palestinians to extend the faltering talks beyond their April 29 deadline. But just hours after he left, news emerged that Israel had reissued tenders for hundreds of settler homes in annexed east Jerusalem, despite a Washington push for a settlement freeze. Not long afterwards, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas announced a request to join several UN agencies, abandoning pledges to refrain from doing so during nine months of talks that Kerry kick-started in July.

No clues in MH370 cockpit transcript as search wears on
Tuesday, Apr 01, 2014 04:35 AM PDT
Malaysia revealed the full radio communications with the pilots of its missing flight Tuesday, but the routine exchanges shed no light on the mystery as an Indian Ocean search for wreckage bore on with no end in sight. The previously unreleased conversations between MH370's pilots and air traffic controllers had been the subject of much speculation as suspicions have focused on whether one or both of its pilots deliberately diverted the plane on March 8 with 239 people aboard. Hours earlier, Australia counselled against expectations of quick success in the difficult task of recovering the Malaysia Airlines plane's "black box" for clues into what might have happened to the jet. Despite an extensive multinational search in remote Indian Ocean waters southwest of Perth where Malaysia believes the plane went down, nothing has been found that would indicate a crash site.

Her tweet prompted an onslaught of gory images of beheaded men, slain bodies and smashed churches that social media followers incorrectly attributed to the Kassab battle.
