A former Arizona socialite was convicted of first-degree murder on Tuesday in the 1996 car-bomb killing of her ex-husband, a prominent real estate developer, in the parking lot of a Tucson resort, prosecutors said. Jurors also found Pamela Phillips, 56, guilty of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the fiery death of husband Gary Triano that shocked the community and went unsolved for years. The Pima County Superior Court jury deliberated for nearly three days before rendering the guilty verdicts, prosecutor Rick Unklesbay said. Phillips faces life in prison with the possibility of parole in 25 years or natural life in prison under the convictions, Unklesbay said.

Florida woman arrested in topless rampage at McDonald's

A bare-breasted woman wearing only bikini bottoms was observed by security cameras vandalizing a Florida McDonald's. In the video, which went viral on Tuesday, the woman is seen shoving cash registers onto the floor, overturning a drinks dispenser and throwing items at staff before helping herself to some ice cream. Sandra Suarez, 41, entered the McDonald's in Pinellas Park on Florida's west coast on March 24, and when an employee asked her to put on some clothes, she refused and became destructive, according to a police report obtained by the Tampa Bay Times. "She destroys it," Pinellas Park police spokesman Sgt. Adam Geissenberger, told the newspaper.

California state senator pleads not guilty to corruption

By Laila Kearney SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A prominent California state senator and gun-control advocate pleaded not guilty in a federal courtroom in San Francisco on Tuesday to charges of corruption and conspiracy to traffic in firearms. Leland Yee, 65, who was arrested last month and has since been suspended with pay, was criminally charged along with about two dozen other individuals in a broad sweep of suspected organized crime and corruption activity in San Francisco. He is the third Democratic state senator to face criminal charges this year in separate cases that have cost his party a cherished two-thirds majority in the upper chamber of the California legislature in an election year. Senator Ron Calderon was indicted on corruption charges and Senator Roderick Wright was convicted of lying about living in the district he sought to represent.

Texas woman arrested after telling police she was sold bad pot

By Lisa Bose McDermott TEXARKANA, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas woman who complained to police that a drug dealer sold her a bad batch of marijuana that did not pack much of a punch has been arrested, police said on Tuesday. Evelyn Hamilton, 37, was jailed on Friday after also telling police in Lufkin, Texas, that the dealer refused to give her a refund. She was later released on $500 bail for a drug paraphernalia charge. She had in her possession a bag with a small amount of pot, said Lufkin Police Sergeant David Casper.

Moroccan man arrested in Connecticut after school bomb plot: officials

(Reuters) - A Moroccan man who entered the United States as an exchange student six years ago is facing criminal charges after planning to use a remote-controlled plane to bomb a U.S. university and a federal building in Connecticut, officials said on Tuesday. The resident of Bridgeport, Connecticut, 26-year-old El Mehdi Semlali Fathi, was arrested on Monday after telling a friend that he was studying how to carry out the bomb attack with a toy plane, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Connecticut and court papers filed by a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent. In a conversation recorded by the FBI, Fathi "repeatedly confirmed his desire to bomb an educational university outside the state of Connecticut" and claimed he had lined up financing from drug dealers to fund the attack, officials said.
