Wednesday, Mar 12, 2014 04:42 PM PDT
By Tim Hanlon BARCELONA, March 12 (Reuters) - Barcelona showed their true quality by eliminating Manchester City from the Champions League, their coach Gerardo Martino said in response to questions about a poor run of form by his team. While it was not a vintage performance from the Catalan side, they showed the right intensity and flashes of quality to beat City 2-1 and eliminate the Premier League team 4-1 on aggregate on Wednesday. In a cagey encounter, it was Lionel Messi who made the breakthrough midway through the second half. City's Pablo Zabaleta was then given a second yellow card for dissent and there were late goals from City's Vincent Kompany and Dani Alves when the tie was all but decided.

By Julien Pretot PARIS, March 12 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain underlined their Champions League credentials not just by thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 6-1 on aggregate in the last 16 on Wednesday but also by showing the strength of their substitutes' bench. Fielding a rejigged side after demolishing the German team 4-0 in the first leg, PSG beat Bayer 2-1 on Wednesday and, despite a stuttering start to the game, were never really in danger. Coach Laurent Blanc rested his usual midfield of Marco Verratti, Thiago Motta and Blaise Matuidi, while Marquinhos was handed a start in central defence in place of Alex.

Messi on target as Barcelona kill off City
Wednesday, Mar 12, 2014 03:35 PM PDT
Barcelona's Messi celebrates after scoring a goal against Manchester City during their Champions League last 16 second leg soccer matchBy Tim Hanlon BARCELONA (Reuters) - Lionel Messi struck to end Manchester City's dreams of a famous comeback as Barcelona beat the English club 2-1 at the Nou Camp on Wednesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate. Barca looked far from the classic team who lifted the trophy in 2009 and 2011 but a stuttering version under Gerardo Martino that had lost two of their last three games was still far too strong for the Premier League club. City, who lost the first leg of the last-16 tie 2-0 at home, were a constant threat to the Spanish champions, but they were left to rue missed chances by David Silva, Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta. Captain Vincent Kompany leveled for the visitors on the night with a tap-in in the 89th minute, but Dani Alves responded by sweeping home the winner in the first minute of stoppage time.
