Pregnant Mom Wants Another Princess, Not A Little Frog
Monday, Mar 03, 2014 09:00 PM PST
DEAR ABBY: I'm a single mother of a beautiful 2-year-old daughter. I have always pictured myself as a mom of four little princesses. When I fantasized about having children, I imagined fairy tales, ballet, cheerleading, dress-up, tea parties -- all girl things. Now I'm expecting a little boy and I feel heartbroken. When I learned my first was a girl, I couldn't wait to meet her. I bought her everything pink and frilly. Here I am eight weeks from my due date, and I have yet to buy this baby a single thing. When I look at baby boy items, I become severely depressed. ...

How Russian, Ukrainian forces stack up
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 06:26 AM PST
Russian soldiers stand near a military vehicle at Belbek airport in the Crimea regionBy Peter Apps LONDON (Reuters) - Underfunded, underequipped and with its senior leadership often seen close to Moscow, Ukraine's military has been something of a no-show in its confrontation with Moscow. Ukrainian forces have been involved in some stand-offs with Russian forces particularly around bases in Crimea, some of which have long been shared between Kiev and Russian forces attached to the Black Sea Fleet. On Sunday, Ukraine's newly appointed navy commander publicly defected to Crimea's regional administration, long Russian dominated and now effectively under Moscow's control.

Putin on Ukraine: What he said, and what he meant
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 07:29 AM PST
Vladimir Putin broke his long public silence over events in Ukraine Tuesday, speaking to a small group of Russian journalists at his official residence just outside Moscow. ● Moscow rejects the way the government in Kiev was changed after months of political upheaval and street violence, but also on principle will never accept revolution as a means of taking power in any other part of the post-Soviet area in future. "I strictly object to this form [of changing power] in Ukraine, and anywhere in the post-Soviet space. In other words, if people in Russia or other former Soviet countries are watching events in Kiev and thinking they might remove their own autocratic leaders in similar fashion, the swift Russian military reaction of the past few days in Crimea is an example of what they may expect.

Shilling discovery could rewrite Canadian history
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 12:09 AM PST
A rare Edward VI shilling, minted in London between 1551 and 1553, is seen on January 23, 2014 in Victoria, British ColumbiaVictoria (Canada) (AFP) - An amateur treasure hunter with a hand-held metal detector has turned Canadian history on its head after finding a 16th century shilling buried in clay on the shores of Vancouver Island. The 435-year-old coin discovered in western-most Canada has rekindled a theory that a British explorer made a secret voyage here two centuries before it was discovered by Spanish sailors. Official historical records show the Spanish were the first Europeans to set foot in what is now Canada's British Columbia province in 1774, followed four years later by British Royal Navy Captain James Cook. Retired security systems installer Bruce Campbell found the coin in mid-December, along with a rare 1891 Canadian nickel, a 1960s dime and penny from 1900.

Why gay rights groups care about a Supreme Court birth control case
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 01:13 PM PST
Access to hormonal birth control hasn't typically been a goal of the gay rights movement. But after a near miss on an anti-gay bill in Arizona last week, LGBT advocacy groups are rallying around a Supreme Court birth control case, arguing that gay people's rights will be collateral damage if the court rules that for-profit businesses do not have to provide contraceptives to female employees.

Obama budget sets up election-year clash with Republicans
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 02:28 PM PST
Copies of President Barack Obama's proposed budget are set out for distribution by Senate Budget Committee Clerk Adam Kamp, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, March 4, 2014. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)By Jeff Mason, Mark Felsenthal and David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama proposed new tax credits and job-training programs for U.S. workers on Tuesday in a 2015 budget that drew instant condemnation from Republicans, who dismissed the document as an election-year campaign pitch. The proposal has almost no chance of passage in Congress, where Republicans control the House of Representatives, but it lays out Obama's policy priorities ahead of November congressional elections. "Our budget is about choices, it's about our values," Obama told reporters during a visit to an elementary school. "At a time when our deficits are falling at the fastest rate in 60 years, we've got to decide if we're going to keep squeezing the middle class or if we're going to continue to reduce the deficits responsibly while taking steps to grow and strengthen the middle class." While working within the overall cap of $1.014 trillion for discretionary spending that Congress set for 2015, the president proposed $56 billion in additional spending for education, welfare and defense programs, paid for in part by ending a tax break for wealthy retirees.

Nepal says litterbugs no longer welcome on Everest
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 03:57 AM PST
FILE – In this Oct. 27, 2011 file photo, the last light of the day sets on Mount Everest as it rises behind Mount Nuptse as seen from Tengboche, in the Himalaya's Khumbu region, Nepal. The Everest climbing season began March 2014 with new rules that require climbers to bring down at least eight kilograms (17.6 pounds) of their personal garbage, and more security officials at the mountain's base camp to help climbers. More than 4,000 climbers have scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit since it was conquered in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay. Over the years, climbers have left tons of garbage on the slopes on the mountain, and some have called it the "world's highest garbage dump." (AP Photo/Kevin Frayer, File)KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Litterbugs, beware: Nepal is making new rules to persuade trekkers to clean up after themselves on Mount Everest, in the hopes of clearing the tons of rubbish now clogging the world's highest peak.

Windows XP diehards aren’t going quietly
Monday, Mar 03, 2014 08:59 PM PST
Windows XP diehards aren't going quietlyMicrosoft has a problem: It desperately wants any remaining Windows XP users to upgrade to a newer version of the operating system but a huge chunk of them still haven't budged. The latest numbers from NetMarketShare show that Windows XP still accounts for around 29.5% of all desktops in use even though Microsoft is due to end support for the 13-year-old platform on April 8th. ZDNet reports that Microsoft plans to pester remaining XP holdovers starting next week by sending them pop-up notifications reminding them — again — that it will end XP support within a month. However, as Computerworld reports, Microsoft may have a tough time convincing some Windows XP users to upgrade because it's trying to sell them
