U.S. forces seize tanker carrying oil from Libya rebel port
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 01:53 PM PDT
Libya rebel tanker seizedBy Ulf Laessing and Feras Bosalum TRIPOLI (Reuters) - U.S. special forces have seized a tanker that fled with a cargo of oil from a Libyan port controlled by anti-government rebels, halting their attempt to sell crude on the global market. Gunmen demanding regional autonomy and a share of oil wealth had managed to load the ship, which escaped Libya's navy and triggered a crisis that prompted parliament to sack the prime minister. A U.S. SEAL commando team boarded the tanker Morning Glory from a Naval special warfare rigid inflatable boat as it sat in international waters off Cyprus on Sunday night. The seizure was approved by U.S. President Barack Obama and requested by the Libyan and Cypriot governments, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said.

Malaysian airplane investigators look at suicide as possible motive
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 01:34 PM PDT
No trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found since it vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard. A search unprecedented in its scale is now under way for the plane, covering an area stretching from the shores of the Caspian Sea in the north to deep in the southern Indian Ocean. Airline chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya also told a news conference that it was unclear exactly when one of the plane's automatic tracking systems had been disabled, appearing to contradict the weekend comments of government ministers. Suspicions of hijacking or sabotage had hardened further when officials said on Sunday that the last radio message from the plane - an informal "all right, good night" - was spoken after the tracking system, known as "ACARS", was shut down.

One Third of Uninsured Won’t Sign Up for Obamacare
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 03:15 AM PDT
One Third of Uninsured Won't Sign Up for ObamacareAs the White House scrambles to get people signed up for health insurance before the March 31 deadline, many uninsured Americans say they are still planning to take their chances and remain without coverage.  A new study by Bankrate.com shows that about one third of uninsured Americans are going to remain without coverage and opt to pay the penalty. The survey results suggest that the administration's outreach to uninsured people may be falling short, with more than half of people without insurance unaware of the March 31 deadline—and even more unaware of subsidies that could make their policies more affordable. Bankrate surveyed 3,005 people and found that 41 percent of those who were uninsured said they plan to stay uninsured because they think that health insurance is too costly.

Last words from missing Malaysian jet spoken by co-pilot
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 03:14 PM PDT
A navigational radar on Indonesia's National Search and Rescue boat shows details during a search in the Andaman sea area around northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 on March 17, 2014The last words from a Malaysian passenger jet missing for 10 days were apparently spoken by the co-pilot, the airline said Monday, providing a glimpse into the crucial period when the plane was deliberately diverted. Clarification that the voice was most likely that of First Officer Fariq Abdul Hamid came during a press conference at which Malaysian officials hit back at "irresponsible" suggestions that they had misled the public -- and passengers' relatives -- over what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and Fariq, his co-pilot, have become a primary focus of the investigation, with one of the key questions being who was in control of the aircraft when it veered off course about an hour into its flight to Beijing.

Cathey Park shows her cast signed by U.S. President Obama after he spoke about health insurance at Faneuil Hall in BostonBy David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 5 million people have enrolled in private health insurance under the law known as Obamacare since open enrollment began on October 1, the U.S. administration said on Monday. With the March 31 enrollment deadline only two weeks away, a top administration official reported a big upswing in public interest in subsidized health insurance and said traffic on the federal website HealthCare.gov reached 1 million visitors over the weekend. "The last several days have been the busiest since December," Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said in a government blog posting that announced the new total. The 5 million enrollee total marked an increase of at least 800,000 people since March 1, indicating that total enrollment could approach the 6 million figure estimated by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office if enrollment surges in the final weeks as administration officials have predicted.

Polluted Paris forces half of its cars off the road
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 09:09 AM PDT
The Eiffel Tower, is barely seen through the smog from Paris, Friday, March 14, 2014. Air pollution that has turned Paris skies a murky yellow is giving a break to millions of French travelers ó all public transportation in the Paris region and two other cities is free for the next three days. Nearly three-quarters of France is under alert in what the European Environment Agency says is the worst air pollution since 2007. (AP Photo/Jacques Brinon)Paris on Monday banned all cars with even number plates for the first time in nearly 20 years to fight sky-high pollution but opted not to extend the measure after an improvement in air quality. Some, though, appeared unaware of the restrictions that came into force across Paris and 22 surrounding areas from 5:30 am (0430 GMT) -- or chose to ignore them. The government decided to implement the ban on Saturday after pollution particulates in the air exceeded safe levels for five straight days in Paris and neighbouring areas, enveloping the Eiffel Tower in a murky haze. On Monday, Airparif, an official monitor for air quality in Paris and neighbouring areas, said pollution levels had since fallen.

Dog Owners Capture Footage of Mischievous Pup Rolling Around on Bed
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 11:01 AM PDT
Owners train their pets to live by a number of different rules and guidelines: Don't eat human food, stay off the countertops, only go to the bathroom outside, and so on. But you cannot babysit your pet 24/7. So for owners of one dog, that meant hiding a video camera in their bedroom to see whether the mutt obeyed a simple rule to stay off the bed. Spoiler alert: He did not. His owners, along with a cat in the room, clearly are not amused, but online viewers across the globe seem to find it hilarious.

US lags as commercial drones take off around globe
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 05:52 AM PDT
FILE - This March 12, 2014 file photo shows a drone landing after flying over the scene of an explosion that leveled two apartment buildings in East Harlem in New York. Brian Wilson, the owner, says he uses the aerial drone to document buildings, weddings and news events. The Federal Aviation Administration bars commercial use of drones no matter how seemingly benign. Officials say rules to address the special safety challenges associated with unmanned aircraft need to be in place before they can share the sky with manned aircraft and final regulations could be years away. But tempting technology and an eager marketplace are outrunning the aviation agency's best intentions. Photographers, real estate agents, moviemakers, and others are hurrying to embrace the technology. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — A small, four-rotor drone hovered over Washington Nationals players for a few days during spring training in Florida last month, taking publicity photos impossible for a human photographer to capture. Marijuana study in veterans wins federal backing
Monday, Mar 17, 2014 11:05 AM PDT
FILE -- In this file photo taken April 4, 2013, marijuana plant starts are seen at a growing facility in Seattle. One of the U.S. Justice Department's top concerns in allowing Washington and Colorado to move forward with plans to legalize and tax marijuana sales is seeing that the states keep criminals out of the industry. But the DOJ itself is refusing to let Washington run national background checks on those applying to run legal pot businesses, The Associated Press has learned, and those who have received the first legal pot licenses have done so without going through a national background check. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File)The federal government has signed off on a long-delayed study looking at marijuana as a treatment for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, a development that drug researchers are hailing as a ...
