Monday, Feb 24, 2014 06:08 PM PST
(Reuters) - Gabriele Grunewald has been reinstated as the U.S. indoor women's 3,000 meters champion and named to the American team for next month's IAAF World Indoor Championships, USA Track and Field said on Monday. The decision came after fellow runner Jordan Hasay, who would have replaced Grunewald on the team, withdrew her protest of the original results. "I've got nothing but love for @JordanHasay," Grunewald said on her Twitter account. "She is a shining light of sportsmanship and integrity in track and field." Grunewald, a cancer survivor, had easily won the race on Saturday at Albuquerque, New Mexico, but after a series of protests and appeals had been disqualified for impeding Hasay late in the race.

Soccer-Huntelaar takes aim at club who shunned him
Monday, Feb 24, 2014 06:00 PM PST
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has gone on to become one of the Bundesliga's most prolific strikers since he was shunned at Real Madrid and will finally have a chance to show his former club what they are missing on Wednesday. Huntelaar's Schalke 04 host the nine-times European champions on Wednesday in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie and the Dutchman, who has scored 51 goals in 89 league appearances for the German side, is looking forward to it as much as anyone. Just eight months later, he was sold to AC Milan for 15 million euros after Florentino Perez returned as Real president and cleared out the Dutch contingent which also included Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.

Soccer-Chelsea "legend" Drogba offers no favours in Turkey
Monday, Feb 24, 2014 06:00 PM PST
By Ece Toksabay ISTANBUL, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Galatasaray's Didier Drogba will be full of emotions when he strides out to face former club Chelsea on Wednesday but Jose Mourinho knows the striker will be as clinical as ever on the field. The Champions League last-16 first-leg clash in Istanbul is the first time the Ivorian has been on the pitch with the Blues since scoring the winning penalty when Chelsea lifted the trophy in May 2012. The 35-year-old, who media reports say could return to the London club as striker coach, is Chelsea's record European scorer with 34 goals in 69 games. "It's a strange feeling but, as we know him so well, we know that for him no friends during the game," Chelsea boss Mourinho, who managed Drogba during his first spell at the club, told reporters.

Godolphin's racing manager quits for new role
Monday, Feb 24, 2014 04:15 PM PST
Simon Crisford has resigned as racing manager of the Godolphin stable and will take a new role as Sheikh Mohammed's global racing advisor, he was quoted as saying on Monday. The 51-year-old's departure comes after a report published this month that was critical of Godolphin and other parts of Sheikh Mohammed's equine operations. Godolphin's former trainer Mahmood al-Zarooni was banned for eight years by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) after being found guilty of administering anabolic steroids at his stables in Newmarket last year. The report, written by former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stevens, cleared Sheikh Mohammed of any wrongdoing and concluded that al-Zarooni had acted alone in the doping scandal that engulfed the stable.

Former NFL kicker Russell Erxleben was sentenced on Monday to 7-1/2 years in prison for running a fraudulent investment scheme that took in about $2 million trading in post-World War One German government bonds and a painting. The sentence, handed out in a federal court in Austin, came from a plea deal negotiated by U.S. prosecutors and the defense, said David Gonzalez, an attorney for Erxleben. The 57-year-old former stand-out kicker with the University of Texas also sought money from investors to purchase a financial interest in a painting supposedly by French artist Paul Gauguin, according to the document submitted by U.S. prosecutors and signed by Erxleben. Erxleben has been in federal prison before.
