Cuban man accused in Miami gold heist arrested in Belize

By David Quinones MIAMI (Reuters) - After a 14-month manhunt in four countries, a Cuban man accused of a $2.8 million Miami gold heist is in custody in Belize and could be headed back to the United States to face charges, authorities and a private investigator said on Thursday. Raonel Valdez Valhuerdis was found last week hiding in bushes near the Guatemalan border outside the small Belize town of Benque Viejo, according to David Bolton, a private investigator contracted to find Valdez by the owner of the gold, Bolivian-based export company Quri Wasi. "Immigration (authorities) there apprehended him because of his passport, but he was acting suspicious, so they Googled his name," said Bolton. Upon finding Valdez's wanted poster online, the Belizean authorities contacted Bolton, who put them in touch with the U.S. Marshals Service.

UK lawyer who stole one million pounds sentenced to six years in jail

A lawyer who eluded British justice for almost 10 years by fleeing to South Africa and changing his name was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday for theft and fraud. John Fitzpatrick pled guilty in an English court to stealing over 1 million pounds ($1.7 million) from clients and participating in mortgage fraud after being extradited from South Africa by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) last year. Six other people have already been sentenced for the illicit money transfers. The SFO said the former lawyer also stole money from clients while helping them buy and sell homes.

Substitute teacher, 72, arrested for furiously masturbating in high school hallway

A 72-year old substitute teacher at a public high school in the never-ending suburbs of Connecticut proved that he's still got it when he was busted for allegedly masturbating right there in a hallway. The septuagenarian teacher is Michael Luecke, reports The Courant. The scene of the crime was Westhill High School in Stamford. Police say a school paraprofessional spotted Luecke doing the deed just after 7:30 a.m. The woman said she walked by Luecke as he was sitting in the hallway.

Gox, other bitcoin exchanges, and businesses that deal in bitcoin to seek information on how they handled recent cyber attacks, a source familiar with the probe said on Wednesday. At least three exchanges were forced to halt withdrawals of bitcoins on February 7, including Mt. Gox, which was the largest at the time. Mt. Gox never resumed service before going dormant on Tuesday, leaving customers unable to recover their funds. "As there is a lot of speculation regarding Mt Gox and its future, I would like to use this opportunity to reassure everyone that I am still in Japan, and working very hard with the support of different parties to find a solution to our recent issues," Karpeles said in a statement posted on the Mt. Gox website.
