Canada's players celebrate after defeating Team USA to win their women's ice hockey gold medal game at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic GamesBy Frank Pingue SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - Canada fought back from the brink of defeat to stun their fiercest rivals the United States and capture a fourth consecutive Olympic women's ice hockey gold medal with a wild 3-2 overtime win at the Sochi Games on Thursday. Trailing by two goals with under four minutes to play in regulation, Canada scored twice, including one with 55 seconds to play, before going on to win on Marie-Philip Poulin's goal eight minutes into the sudden-death overtime period. "We've worked so hard all year, we've been together for a really long time, we never gave up and I think it showed," said Canadian forward Meghan Agosta. "We never gave up, we kept battling and knew it was still possible and it just showed tonight." The triumph capped an undefeated run in Sochi for a Canada team that have won four of the five gold medals awarded since women's ice hockey made its debut at the 1998 Nagano Games.

Former professional football player Sharper appears for his arraignment at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los AngelesBy Dana Feldman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former football star Darren Sharper pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges that he drugged and raped two women in a Los Angeles hotel as investigations continue into similar sex crimes in four other U.S. states, according to police and court documents. The hearing occurred on the same day police in his home of Miami Beach, Florida, released details on one of the probes against him. Sharper, who played 14 years in the National Football League and won a Super Bowl title in 2010 with the New Orleans Saints, is accused by prosecutors of giving the prescription sleep medication zolpidem to the women in Los Angeles, causing them to pass out. In October, he met two women at a West Hollywood night club and brought them back to a Los Angeles hotel room, where he gave a drug-spiked drink to both of them and raped one, prosecutors said in court papers.

Northern Ireland's Graeme Mcdowell tees off on the second hole during the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open golf championship at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore(Reuters) - Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell felt emotionally drained but extremely fortunate after pulling off a Houdini-like escape for a second successive day at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday. McDowell had delivered the biggest surprise in Wednesday's opening round when he rallied from four down after seven holes, and three down after 15, to beat American Gary Woodland one up after 19 holes. Twenty-four hours later, he battled past Japan's Hideki Matsuyama one up, having rallied from two down after 14 holes in a match where he never led until his clinching par at the 18th. "Why do it the easy way when the hard way will do?" McDowell smiled as he spoke to reporters after booking his place in the third round at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.

Canada's Poulin bites her gold medal after her team defeated Team USA in overtime in the women's ice hockey final game at the 2014 Sochi Winter OlympicsBy Frank Pingue SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - Marie-Philip Poulin is considered a clutch performer on the big stage and she was at it again on Thursday, leading Canada to a thrilling come-from-behind win in the women's ice hockey gold medal game at the Sochi Olympics. Four years after scoring both goals in a 2-0 title triumph over the United States at the Vancouver Games, Poulin netted the tying goal and overtime winner in a 3-2 win over the same opponents for Canada's fourth straight Olympic gold. "She doesn't speak a lot but there's something in her eyes that spells 'big game player' and obviously she showed that in Vancouver and I think she put a major stamp on that today," Canadian coach Kevin Dineen told reporters. The 22-year-old forward struck again eight minutes into the sudden-death overtime when she swatted the puck into the U.S. net while Canada was enjoying a four-on-three powerplay.

Olympics-Figure skating-Sotnikova win raises judging questions
Thursday, Feb 20, 2014 04:40 PM PST
By Pritha Sarkar SOCHI, Russia, Feb 20 (Reuters) - There had been rumblings for days that Russian figure skaters were being marked rather generously at the Sochi Olympics, judges seemingly awarding scores with their hearts rather than their heads after being carried on a wave of national euphoria. Just how much the heart ruled the head became clear on Thursday when, amid deafening roars and frenzied cheers, Adelina Sotnikova became the first Russian to win the women's title with a surprising free skate score of 149.95. The fact that her victory margin in the long programme was judged to be 5.76 points more than overwhelming favourite Kim Yuna and 7.34 points ahead of bronze medallist Carolina Kostner - who had both produced stirring performances - left even the experts and former champions bewildered. She (Sotnikova) skated well, I don't know if she was eight points ahead of Carolina Kostner," three-times former U.S. national champion Johnny Weir said while commentating on NBC.
