Monday night viewing: close encounter with enormous asteroid
Monday, Feb 17, 2014 07:50 PM PST
(Reuters) - An asteroid estimated to be the size of three football fields is set for its close-up on a live webcast as it whizzes by Earth on Monday, roughly a year after one exploded over Russia and injured 1,200 people. Slooh Space Camera plans to track the close approach of Asteroid 2000 EM26 as it races past the planet at approximately 27,000 miles per hour (43,000 km/h), starting at 9 p.m. EST (2 a.m. GMT, February 18), the robotic telescope service said in a statement on Slooh.com. The 295-yard (270-meter) asteroid was expected to streak by Earth little more than a year after another asteroid exploded on February 15, 2013 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring 1,200 people following a massive shock wave that shattered windows and damaged buildings. However, the International Olympic Committee at the last minute said it could be done only after the games and separately.

Earth marks close encounter with enormous asteroid
Monday, Feb 17, 2014 07:49 PM PST
(Webcast held, asteroid unsighted) Feb 17 (Reuters) - An asteroid estimated to be the size of three football fields whizzed close to Earth on Monday, roughly a year after one exploded over Russia and injured 1,200 people. Slooh Space Camera tracked the approach of the asteroid as it raced past the planet at about 27,000 mph (43,000 kmph), starting at 9 p.m. EST (2 a.m. GMT, Feb. 18), the robotic telescope service said in a statement on Slooh.com. The Dubai Astronomy Group provided Slooh photos of the part of the sky where the rock was expected to be seen, but its motion could not be picked out immediately in a live webcast against the backdrop of night-time stars. The 295-yard (270-m) asteroid was streaking past Earth at a distance of about 2.1 million miles (3.4 million km) little more than a year after another asteroid exploded on Feb. 15, 2013, over Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Monday, Feb 17, 2014 06:00 PM PST
By Iain Rogers MADRID, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Clarence Seedorf will need to tap into all the experience he gained as the only player to win the Champions League with three different clubs if his AC Milan side are to get past Atletico Madrid into the quarter-finals. Milan host the Spanish club, who are riding high in La Liga, for their last 16, first leg on Wednesday, when Seedorf will make his coaching debut in Europe's elite club competition after taking over last month from Massimiliano Allegri. The 37-year-old former Netherlands midfielder won the Champions League once with Ajax Amsterdam and once with Real Madrid before a decade playing at Milan yielded two more continental titles.

Soccer-Arsenal need perfection against Bayern
Monday, Feb 17, 2014 06:00 PM PST
By Josh Reich LONDON, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Arsenal will be out to show they have learnt the lessons of last season's painful home defeat by Bayern Munich when the sides meet again in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in London on Wednesday. Holders Bayern were utterly dominant in 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium, and although Arsenal went on to salvage pride with a 2-0 win in Munich in the return leg, it was not enough to prevent the Gunners going out of the competition in the round of 16 for the third consecutive season. They face a daunting task to avoid making it four years in a row, however, with the Bayern juggernaut showing little sign of slowing under Pep Guardiola, who led Barcelona to victory over Arsenal at this stage in the 2010-11 season.

Olympics-Slalomers lead way as Sochi makes up for lost time
Monday, Feb 17, 2014 05:00 PM PST
SOCHI, Russia, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg goes for a second Olympic gold in giant slalom on Tuesday in one of seven medal events after fog and drizzle caused organisers to reschedule two from Monday. A surprise winner in 2010, Rebensburg has suffered with illness this season and will have to fend off American Julia Mancuso, the gold medallist in 2006. Slovenian all-rounder Tina Maze, who shared gold in the tied donwhill race, is another contender. Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch won the super-combined but is running out of time to equal Janica Kostelic's Alpine ski record of four Olympic golds.

Two skiers killed in Colorado avalanche identified
Monday, Feb 17, 2014 04:30 PM PST
By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - Two men from Wisconsin were identified as having died in a weekend avalanche that buried a skiing party atop an 11,000-foot mountain pass in Colorado, authorities said on Monday. The bodies of Jarrard Law, 34, of Portage, and Justin Lentz, 32, of Sun Prairie, have been retrieved from the mountainside, the Lake County Office of Emergency Management said in a statement. The pair were skiing with five other people - two from Wisconsin and three from Colorado - on the east side of Independence Pass near the town of Twin Lakes on Saturday when the group triggered the snow slide, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said in its report on the incident. The two men killed were equipped with avalanche beacons, which helped recovery teams locate their bodies, Lake County spokeswoman Susan Matthews said.

Monday, Feb 17, 2014 04:25 PM PST
By Greg Stutchbury WELLINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Brendon McCullum became the first New Zealand batsman to score a test triple-century as the hosts declared their second innings on 680-8 before lunch on the fifth day of the second test against India on Tuesday. Captain McCullum's 302 virtually ensured his team will win the two-match series, having won the first game by 40 runs at Eden Park, while giving them a chance of bowling India out in the two remaining sessions at Wellington's Basin Reserve to clinch a second victory. The tourists began their second innings needing 435 runs in 67 overs to win the test and went to the lunch break on 10 for none with Murali Vijay on seven and Shikhar Dhawan on two. Debutant all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, who had resumed on 67 on Tuesday, quickly raced through to his first test century and was 137 not out when McCullum called an end to the innings about 25 minutes before the break.
