Texas District Attorney Candidate Says Domestic Violence Is 'Overrated' or a Sex ThingLloyd Oliver, a Democratic candidate for District Attorney in Harris County, Texas, doesn't think domestic violence is a real problem. He indicated to the Texas Observer that if elected, he'd move funding away from domestic violence to other issues. Harris County happens to have the highest rate of domestic homicides in Texas.  In an interview with the Observer's Emily Deprang, released Wednesday, Oliver said that "family violence is so, so overrated." Oliver, 70, has been a criminal defense attorney for 40 years.

British-Norwegian found guilty of killing cell mate in Congo jail

By Peter Jones KINSHASA (Reuters) - A court in Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday found a British-Norwegian dual national guilty of killing his cell mate at a military prison where the two men were serving life sentences. The victim, fellow Norwegian Tjostolv Moland, was found dead in his cell in August. Congo's government initially said Moland's death appeared to be a suicide but subsequently charged his cell mate and former business partner, Joshua French, with murder. French's mother, Kari Hilde French, was in the courtroom for the reading of the verdict.

Philadelphia faith-healer couple sentenced to prison in son's death

By Dave Warner PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Philadelphia faith-healing father and mother were sentenced on Wednesday to up to seven years in prison for the death of their infant son, the second of their children to die after an illness. Seven-month-old Brandon Schaible died on April 18 of bacterial pneumonia and dehydration. His parents Herbert and Catherine Schaible were found guilty of third-degree homicide, endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy. Prosecutors said they did nothing to help the baby when he fell ill and at the sentencing in Common Pleas Court, Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said the case "haunts" her.

Identified only as Valerie, and Juror #4, she said Dunn, who is white, got away with killing black teenager Jordan Davis. There is no longer a Jordan Davis, and there is only one reason why that is. "Do you think Michael Dunn got away with murder?" a Nightline interviewer asked her.

The attack last year followed clashes between security forces and demonstrators on the second anniversary of the 2011 uprising by mostly majority Shi'ite Muslims demanding democratic reforms in the Sunni-ruled kingdom, a key U.S. regional ally. In those clashes, security forces killed a teenager and injured dozens more protesters, an opposition website said. Security forces confirmed they had fired warning shots at the crowds and one young man had been killed. Bahrain crushed the demonstrations that began on February 14, 2011 amid the protest wave sweeping other Arab countries, but it has yet to resolve the conflict between majority Shi'ites and the Sunni-led monarchy they accuse of oppressing them.

Australian Christian missionary arrested in North Korea

By James Pearson SEOUL (Reuters) - An Australian man has been arrested while doing missionary work in North Korea, his wife told Reuters on Wednesday, making him the second foreign Christian missionary to be held by the North. The wife of 75-year-old John Short told Reuters her husband was arrested in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, on Sunday and had been open about his religious work on his second trip to the isolated country. "He won't be intimidated by the communists," Karen Short told Reuters from Hong Kong by telephone. North Korea has held American missionary Kenneth Bae for more than a year and convicted him of trying to overthrow the state.
