Prog rock meets folk as Moulettes soar in London
Monday, Dec 02, 2013 07:15 AM PST
By Jeremy Gaunt LONDON (Reuters) - One of the more startling moments at the London concert by British folk band Moulettes this weekend was when founding member Ruth Skipper turned her bassoon into an instrument of industrial rock. As bass and drums hammered out a heavy beat and an electric fiddle and wired cello soared to feverish heights, Skipper turned from the audience, bent near double and roared out a riff that would have done a Moog synthesizer proud. But it works," said Skipper, who also sings and plays autoharp. Welcome to the world of prog folk, an unusual marriage of traditional British folk music with the prog - or progressive - rock that dominated alternative music in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

A judge is due to pronounce a verdict on Tuesday in the month-long trial of former soloist Pavel Dmitrichenko that has shone a spotlight on bitter rivalries behind the scenes. State prosecutors have asked for a nine-year prison term but he could still be jailed for up to 12 years if convicted over an attack that nearly blinded the Bolshoi ballet's artistic director, Sergei Filin. The month-long trial of Dmitrichenko and two alleged accomplices has tainted the reputation of one of Russia's most prominent cultural symbols.
