The show made a clear bid for the quirky, a benefit of being streamed by YouTube rather than broadcast on television. 'Ender's Game' battles to U.S., Canada box office win Sunday, Nov 03, 2013 11:45 AM PST By Lisa Richwine and Chris Michaud LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) - "Ender's Game," the futuristic story of children forced to fight an enemy race, battled to the top of box office charts in the United States and Canada, defeating senior citizen buddy comedy "Last Vegas" and animated turkey tale "Free Birds." Based on a best-selling 1985 novel, "Ender's Game" collected $28 million in ticket sales over its first three days, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Elsewhere, Marvel action hero Thor hammered into international theaters for sequel "Thor: The Dark World," hauling in $109.4 million from Wednesday through Sunday, distributor Walt Disney Co said. The movie debuts in the United States and Canada on Friday. Eminem and Rihanna grab top slot in UK single charts Sunday, Nov 03, 2013 11:03 AM PST American rapper Eminem and singer Rihanna have grabbed the top spot in Britain's single charts, the Official Charts Company said on Sunday, denying One Direction what would have been the band's fourth number one. Scorsese, Hockney honored at LA intersection of art and film Sunday, Nov 03, 2013 09:16 AM PST By Mary Milliken LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - American film director Martin Scorsese and British artist David Hockney were honored at the Art + Film Gala, an annual gathering that aims to bring the art and movie industries of Los Angeles closer together. In a Saturday night event heavy with Hollywood actors and studio executives at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, or LACMA, the Oscar-winning director Scorsese was praised for helping save the museum's film program when it was nearly scrapped during the financial crisis, and for his work on film restoration. Hockney, a multimedia artist who lived and painted for decades in Los Angeles, was recognized for the way he captured the city, from swimming pools to Mulholland Drive - images that came to define Southern California for many. "I first arrived in Los Angeles, almost 50 years ago in January 1964, and they were just putting up this building," said the 76-year-old Hockney, who moved back to England a few years ago. Israel's Bezeq mulls raising stake in TV unit YES Sunday, Nov 03, 2013 02:44 AM PST Bezeq Israel Telecom said on Sunday it will have to meet a series of conditions if it wishes to merge with its satellite television unit YES. The anti-trust authority sent Bezeq, Israel's largest telecoms group, a draft of the conditions last week, it said in a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Bezeq holds a 49.8 percent stake in YES, which has close to 600,000 subscribers.
