Branson Has Endured a Rough Year for Weather

Yahoo! Contributor Network - The EF2 tornado that blew through Branson, Mo., this week hit the heart of its entertainment district. Several buildings were damaged and damage estimates are in the "many millions" of dollars, according to the Kansas City Star. Hotels, theaters, go kart tracks and restaurants have all suffered damage just as the vital tourist season is getting ready to start in mid-March. Full Story

Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The world's oceans are turning acidic at what could be the fastest pace of any time in the past 300 million years, even more rapidly than during a monster emission of planet-warming carbon 56 million years ago, scientists said on Thursday. Looking back at that bygone warm period in Earth's history could offer help in forecasting the impact of human-spurred climate change, researchers said of a review of hundreds of studies of ancient climate records published in the journal Science. ... Northeast gets a rare taste of wintry weather

Reuters - BOSTON (Reuters) - The Northeast was hit with a blast of winter weather -- rare this year -- as a storm plowing through the region on Thursday was expected to blanket areas from New York to Maine with up to a foot of snow. Schools were delayed and closed across the region with some areas of Vermont waking up to nearly 10 inches of snow already on the ground, according to National Weather Service early snowfall totals. Winter storm warnings were issued for much of New England with up to a foot of snow possible in areas, NWS said. ... Full Story

CA walloped as snow falls over parts of north US

Weather Gives Syrians a Reprieve, Britain Closes Its Damascus Embassy

The Atlantic Wire - The British foreign secretary announced today that the UK has closed its embassy in Syria and has sent home its entire diplomatic staff. The embassy had already been reduced to a bare-bones groups of about 10 people thanks to the rising violence in the capital, but secretary Wiliam Hague said the security situation had become to risky to continue.  Full Story

Reuters - DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales for February are expected to post a modest rise from year-earlier levels, as the industry continues its gradual recovery thanks to a rise in consumer confidence and the need to replace aging cars and trucks. "Between surprisingly strong sales over Presidents Day weekend, optimistic economic news, and unseasonably mild weather conditions across the country, things seem to be breaking the right way for both car buyers and dealers," said Jessica Caldwell, analyst at Edmunds.com.
