UK judge says mafia fugitive free to go home
Thursday, Mar 27, 2014 11:29 AM PDT
Convicted mafia boss Domenico Rancadore arrives to report at Uxbridge Police Station in West London on March 18, 2014A judge in Britain told convicted mafia boss Domenico Rancadore on Thursday that he was free to return to his life in the London suburbs, after prosecutors said they would not appeal a ruling that blocked his extradition to Italy. Rancadore, who was arrested in Britain last year after 20 years on the run, won his legal fight against extradition on March 17 on the basis that returning to Italy's overcrowded prisons would breach his human rights. At a hearing in London on Thursday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that it had lodged an appeal but that it was not served within the statutory time limit and was therefore being withdrawn. Rancadore, 65, known as "The Professor", was sentenced in Italy in his absence in 1999 to seven years in prison for associating with the mafia.

By Kevin Murphy Kansas City, Missouri (Reuters) - Former fugitive Virgil Tillman will have plenty of time to contemplate his unfortunate choice of restaurants as he sits in jail. Wanted on weapons and drugs charges by three counties in two states, Tillman was spotted at a pricey restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, by a fellow diner - an off-duty deputy U.S. marshal who had been pursuing him for two months, said acting chief deputy U.S. marshal for Kansas, Matt Cahill, on Thursday. The marshal, who just happened to pick the same place to have dinner on Sunday night, recognized Tillman from photos, Cahill said. He also recognized Tillman's dining companion, a woman he had interviewed about the fugitive who denied knowing his whereabouts, Cahill said.

Montana bride accused in husband's cliff death to be sentenced
Thursday, Mar 27, 2014 04:01 AM PDT
Jordan Graham leaves U.S. District court in Missoula, MontanaA Montana bride who shoved her husband of eight days off a cliff at Glacier National Park is due to be sentenced on Thursday, and a judge was expected to rule on a defense motion to withdraw her guilty plea to a second-degree murder charge. Attorneys for 22-year-old Jordan Graham on Tuesday asked a federal judge to rescind her guilty plea from December, alleging prosecutors are overreaching by seeking a life sentence and reneging on an agreement that they expected to involve less prison time. Federal prosecutors wrote in documents submitted on Wednesday that Graham's request to withdraw her plea was without merit and should be denied. In exchange for Graham pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the July 7 death of her husband of eight days, 25-year-old Cody Johnson, prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge, which alleges premeditation and carries a mandatory life sentence.
