Monday, Jan 27, 2014 05:10 PM PST
Seattle Seahawks receiver Tate addresses the media during a news conference at Newport in New JerseyBy Larry Fine JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) - The Seattle Seahawks were forced to move their Super Bowl practice inside on Monday as frigid temperatures left fields frozen ahead of Sunday's outdoor NFL championship game. Outdoor practice fields were left covered in snow and frozen after a spell of arctic weather in the New Jersey area, although temperatures rose above freezing on Monday. We had a great workout today," Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told reporters about using the New York Giants' indoor facility at the Meadowlands complex next to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Seahawks' Bennett hopes to cause Super Bowl havoc for Manning
Monday, Jan 27, 2014 04:55 PM PST
A worker walks on a stage in front of the NFL logo in New York's Times SquareBy Larry Fine JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) - Claiming a first Super Bowl crown for the Seattle Seahawks could come down to whether the NFL's leading defense can put pass-rush pressure on Denver Broncos record-setting quarterback Peyton Manning. Defensive end Michael Bennett, Seattle's leading sack man and wry humorist, and head coach Pete Carroll understand the difficulty in slowing down the quick strikes thrown by Manning. "We would love to affect him," Carroll told reporters after Monday's practice about upsetting the timing of Manning, who set single season records for touchdown passes and passing yardage. All of that to keep him from being so efficient." Bennett, who joined the Seahawks as a free agent after four seasons in Tampa Bay, may be Seattle's best bet after using his skills to register 8.5 sacks in the regular season.

Soccer-Argentine ref retires yellow, sees red, only red
Monday, Jan 27, 2014 04:24 PM PST
Referee Carlos Maglio realised that even after dishing out eight bookings in a friendly between bitter Argentine rivals Estudiantes and Gimnasia the players were not getting the message, so he relinquished his yellow card to send a clear warning: the next one's red. Maglio handed over his yellow card to one of his assistants during the second half of Sunday's 1-1 draw in the seaside resort of Mar del Plata in a friendly played during the season's summer break. Sooner afterwards, Maglio sent off Estudiantes midfielder Israel Damonte for violent play. "Even if I'd had the yellow card he would still have gone off," said the ref of Damonte.

Broncos' Moreno hopes to hold back tears at Super Bowl
Monday, Jan 27, 2014 03:45 PM PST
Workers are seen on stage at Times Square as preparations continue for Super Bowl XLVIII in New YorkOne of the best examples of this is before the Super Bowl, when tens of thousands of people rise to their feet and join in the singing of the U.S. national anthem. For some players, it can be an overwhelming moment as they try to stop tears from welling up in their eyes and their lips from quivering in front of a worldwide television audience. But on Sunday, when the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks clash in the National Football League's championship game, the cameras are sure to focus in on one player when American soprano Renee Fleming starts hitting the high notes. Denver running back Knowshon Moreno may be one of the most rugged players in the NFL but he's also a self-confessed cry baby and if he starts sobbing on Sunday his tears could get more attention than any snowflakes.

NFL figures say league should keep open mind on medical marijuana
Monday, Jan 27, 2014 02:51 PM PST
Seattle Seahawks head coach Carroll speaks during a news conference at Newport in New JerseyBy Scott Malone NEW YORK (Reuters) - The coach of the Super Bowl-bound Seattle Seahawks on Monday echoed the NFL commissioner's assertion that the league should not rule out allowing players to use medical marijuana to manage pain, if medical science supports the idea. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters the National Football League should be open to use of the drug, currently banned by its rules, if doctors broadly come around to the idea. "We have to explore and find ways to make our game a better game and take care of our players in whatever way possible," Carroll told reporters as his team prepared for Sunday's championship game against the Denver Broncos. "Regardless of what other stigmas might be involved, we have to do this because the world of medicine is doing this." Carroll's words followed comments by Commissioner Roger Goodell last week that the league would follow the lead of doctors in determining whether to drop its opposition to players' use of the drug.
