Soccer-South Korea beat Costa Rica 1-0 in friendly
Saturday, Jan 25, 2014 08:07 PM PST
South Korea beat Costa Rica 1-0 in Los Angeles on Saturday to win the first of three friendlies on their tour of North America as they continue their preparations for the World Cup in Brazil. Towering striker Kim Shin-wook scored the only goal in the 10th minute of an ill-tempered match in which two Costa Ricans were sent off. Defender Christopher Meneses was shown a straight red card after 68 minutes and replacement midfielder Mauricio Castillo was ordered off after picking up a second yellow card four minutes from the end. It was an encouraging result for South Korea, who were drawn with Belgium, Russia and Algeria in Group H for the World Cup, after they selected a weakened squad for the tour.

Woods endures nightmare day at Torrey Pines
Saturday, Jan 25, 2014 06:02 PM PST
PGA: Farmers Insurance Open Third Round(Reuters) - Defending champion Tiger Woods plunged to new depths when he missed a secondary cut on the PGA Tour for the first time after struggling badly in Saturday's third round of the Farmers Insurance Open outside San Diego. It was his worst ever score at the event, which he has won at Torrey Pines a record seven times, and ensured he would miss the third-round cut for the leading 70 players and ties, giving him the unwanted label of 'MDF' (made cut, did not finish). Woods, whose remarkable playoff win at the 2008 U.S. Open also took place at Torrey Pines, declined to speak to Golf Channel and CBS Sports after he had signed his scorecard, and also turned down requests to talk to reporters. Woods, who won last year's Farmers Insurance Open by four shots in a fog-delayed Monday finish, endured a damaging run of back-to-back double bogeys followed by five straight bogeys from the 18th, his ninth hole, to finish at six-over-par 222.

Priority number one for his team is to stay focused and stay on top of the job at hand. Enjoy your family, but it's not spring break." - - - Denver Broncos place-kicker Matt Prater was sent home from the team's facility with an illness, but coach John Fox fully anticipates Prater to be healthy in time for the Super Bowl and is not concerned about the illness spreading throughout the locker room.

Soccer-Juve's Spanish striker Llorente eyes World Cup spot
Saturday, Jan 25, 2014 03:52 PM PST
By Terry Daley January 25 (Reuters) - Juventus striker Fernando Llorente is staking a claim for a place in Spain's World Cup squad after his red hot form has made him a fixture in the Italian champions front line. The 28-year-old scored his ninth league goal this season, his fifth in as many games, when he met Stefan Lichtsteiner's cross with a deft headed finish as 10-man Juve drew 1-1 at Lazio and extended their lead atop Serie A to nine points. "I had to move the ball towards a particular part of the goal, which wasn't very easy." Since moving to Turin from Athletic Bilbao in the close season Llorente has established himself as part of Juventus coach Antonio Conte's first choice attack alongside Argentine Carlos Tevez after a tough start.

Anti-World Cup protest draws over 2,000 in Sao Paulo
Saturday, Jan 25, 2014 03:46 PM PST
The year's first major protest against the World Cup drew more than 2,000 demonstrators into the streets of Brazil's largest city on Saturday, as frustration over the cost of the tournament lingers in the host country. But the demonstration in Sao Paulo fell far short of the more than 20,000 people who confirmed attendance on Facebook, highlighting the diminished energy of recent protests compared to the public unrest during the Confederations Cup tournament held here last June. Politicians and investors are watching closely this year to see if another wave of protests could sully the image of the World Cup or weigh on the popularity of President Dilma Rousseff ahead of elections in October. As the largely peaceful Sao Paulo demonstration wrapped up around sunset, local television registered isolated acts of vandalism, including broken bank windows, a smashed police car and a Volkswagen beetle engulfed in flames.
