Motor racing-After 'Rush', F1 safety hits the screens
Thursday, Dec 26, 2013 06:00 PM PST
By Alan Baldwin LONDON, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Francois Cevert had the most piercing blue eyes, the presence of a movie star and a Gallic charm that melted hearts wherever he went. A pitlane heart-throb, the Parisian was a hero of more carefree times - one moment escorting Brigitte Bardot or playing the concert piano and the next risking his life in the most dangerous and glamorous of arenas. More than a decade before Alain Prost captured his first title in 1985, it was Cevert - Jackie Stewart's friend and team mate at Tyrrell - who had seemed destined to become France's first world champion.

Soccer-Liverpool contenders despite City defeat, says Rodgers
Thursday, Dec 26, 2013 05:12 PM PST
Liverpool proved they deserved a place among the top four clubs in England despite the 2-1 defeat in the Boxing Day fixture at Manchester City, manager Brendan Rodgers said. City were forced to come from behind to preserve their perfect home record on Thursday and also had cause to be thankful for a controversial disallowed Liverpool goal in the first half. That decision added a little anger to Rodgers' disappointment at his team's failure to come away from Manchester with at least a point but his overwhelming emotion was one of pride.

Cricket-Johnson runs through tail as England dismissed for 255
Thursday, Dec 26, 2013 04:40 PM PST
By Ian Ransom MELBOURNE, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Australia seamer Mitchell Johnson captured three quick wickets as England were bowled out for 255 in less than an hour before lunch on the second day of the fourth Ashes test on Friday. England resumed on 226-6, but Johnson struck in the second over of the morning with his first ball to remove Tim Bresnan for one, the all-rounder fending off a venomous, rising ball to give a scrambling George Bailey a simple catch at square leg. Johnson then bowled Kevin Pietersen for 71 four balls later when the South Africa-born batsman swiped across the line in a horrible attempted slog that will do little to silence his detractors. Stuart Broad came out swinging, smacking a pair of boundaries off Ryan Harris before nearly being caught and bowled by the seamer when on 10.
