Transient arrested on tarmac at Phoenix airport

By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - A homeless man was arrested after running onto the tarmac just after a Southwest Airlines plane landed at the Phoenix airport, police said on Thursday. Robert Bump, 49, hit the plane with his hand before being taken into custody on the taxiway at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at about 5:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, said Officer James Holmes, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, is accused of pulling an assault weapon out of a duffel bag and opening fire on Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers in Terminal 3 of the busy airport on November 1. Gerardo Hernandez, a 39-year-old father of two, was the first TSA agent to be killed in the line of duty since the body was set up after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Two other TSA officers were among the wounded.

This was the second court appearance for Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, in connection with the November 1 shooting spree that left him critically wounded after a gunfight with police. Ciancia, who had a bandage on his neck, spoke softly in a hoarse voice during the arraignment and pleaded not guilty to all charges in an 11-count federal indictment against him. Ciancia is accused of walking into Terminal 3 at the airport, removing a semi-automatic rifle from a bag and opening fire on an unarmed Transportation Security Administration officer standing at the entrance to a security checkpoint.
