Horse racing-Wise Dan again shines as Game on Dude fades
Saturday, Nov 02, 2013 08:36 PM PDT
By Mark Lamport-Stokes ARCADIA, California, Nov 2 (Reuters) - For a second year in a row at the Breeders' Cup, Wise Dan cemented his credentials as North America's top-ranked race horse while Game on Dude spectacularly failed as favourite for the showpiece Classic. That accolade now seems certain to fall to Wise Dan after the six-year-old gelding surged to a repeat victory in the $2 million Mile, despite an early stumble out of the gate and being ridden by a replacement jockey. John Velazquez was initially scheduled to be on board but had to have emergency surgery after falling with his horse during a race earlier in the day. Jose Lezcano took over, and guided Wise Dan to victory by three-quarters of a length.

Horse racing -'Old Man' Stevens steals Breeders show
Saturday, Nov 02, 2013 07:51 PM PDT
By Ben Everill ARCADIA, California, Nov 2 (Reuters) - It was fitting an old classic won the Classic at the Breeders Cup racing festival on Saturday as 50-year-old jockey Gary Stevens backed up his impressive first day victory in the Distaff on Beholder with a sublime ride on Mucho Macho Man. Stevens was riding against a much younger crowd at Santa Anita on Saturday in the $5million premier race, including two jockeys who were not born when he won his first Breeders' Cup event in 1990, but the old hand guided his thoroughbred to the winners circle to cap a brilliant comeback year. I'd been so close so many times and I figured it just wasn't meant to be." The Hall of Famer could have had a third win in the carnival after crossing the line first on She's A Tiger in the Juvenile Fillies only to be relegated to second place after making contact with Ria Antonia down the home straight.

Australian PGA champion Popovic to skip title defense
Saturday, Nov 02, 2013 07:41 PM PDT
Daniel Popovic will not defend his title at next week's Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast in order to contest the European Tour's qualifying tournament in Spain. The final round of the Australian PGA next Sunday coincides with the first day of the qualifying tournament. "For my future and career, and looking to the big picture, I have to go to the European Tour school," the 27-year-old Popovic said at the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament on Sunday. "That's my best opportunity of getting to where I want to be with my career, playing against the better players in the world and challenging myself every week." If he does not win a European Tour card, Popovic will head to either the Japan Tour or secondary U.S. PGA Tour qualifying school, which means he also might miss the Australian Masters and the Australian Open later this month.
