Nine people were killed in the town of Yecuatla, three in the city of Tuxpan, and one in the town of Atzalan, all in Mexico's eastern Veracruz state, Governor Javier Duarte said. "All of (the deaths) were caused by landslides in the hills above their homes," Duarte said at a news conference. ...

Onyx deal expected to give Amgen a big boost

By Susan Kelly (Reuters) - Investors reacted favorably on Monday to Amgen Inc's $10.4 billion purchase of Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc, which gives the world's largest biotech company full rights to a blood cancer drug with multibillion-dollar sales potential. Amgen shares rose 9 percent in midday trade on news of the acquisition, the biggest biotech deal since Gilead Sciences Inc's $11 billion purchase of Pharmasset in 2012. The main prize in the acquisition is Onyx's blood cancer drug Kyprolis. ...

Acura's abuse-deterrent pain drug fails mid-stage study goal

The mid-stage study showed that Acura's tablet, being tested for potential abuse by snorting, had a slightly lower measure of liking when compared with the generic hydrocodone/acetaminophen tablet. ...

Pennsylvania girl who sued for lung transplants to leave hospital

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - An 11-year-old Pennsylvania girl whose parents filed a lawsuit challenging national transplant policies so she could receive two lung transplants will be released from the hospital on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for her family said on Monday. The girl, Sarah Murnaghan, underwent an operation earlier this summer to receive the transplants in a case that set off a national debate about child access to organ donations. She had earlier been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. A federal judge cleared the way for the operation in June after her parents sued to stop the U.S. ...

New Jersey to build storm-resilient grid for its transit system

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Department of Energy and the state of New Jersey announced plans on Monday to design a small electric grid that will serve the state's transit system and withstand the onslaught of storms like Superstorm Sandy. The micro grid will power the transit system's rail operations between Newark, Jersey City and Hoboken in New Jersey. Rigel drops asthma drug after trial fails, stock hits life-low

(Reuters) - Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc said it will stop developing its experimental asthma drug after the therapy failed in a mid-stage trial, sending its shares down as much as 17 percent to a life-low. The failure of the inhaled drug is the latest blow to the company's pipeline after its partner AstraZeneca pulled out of developments of their rheumatoid arthritis pill in June. The inhaled asthma drug, R343, was being tested as a treatment for patients with allergic asthma, but failed to meet any of its goals, including improving lung function. ...

Finance chief of South Africa's Sasol to step down next month

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African petrochemicals company Sasol Ltd said on Monday its chief financial officer will step down next month after seven years with the company. Christine Ramon's last day at Sasol will be on September 9, when the company releases its full-year results. Paul Victor, an executive in the group's finance division, has been appointed acting CFO, Sasol said.
