| Psoriasis patients look to Hong Kong government for help - and hope Sunday, Nov 25, 2012 06:00 PM PST HONG KONG (Reuters) - When Gary Lai first came down with the skin disease psoriasis, he got so tired of the stigma he faced in the outside world that he would lock himself away in his apartment whenever he didn't have to be at work. "When you have to apply ointment all over your body, it is impractical. It also has a smell and when you go to work, your colleagues will start asking questions," said Lai, who was 24 when he was diagnosed. ... Full Story | Top |
| Nurses can help improve vaccination rates: study Sunday, Nov 25, 2012 04:18 PM PST (Reuters) - More elderly and at-risk adults get their flu and pneumonia vaccinations when the shots are coordinated and given by nurses instead of doctors, according to a North American study. Researchers, whose results appeared in the Annals of Family Medicine, said that the change was linked to a 44 percent increase in patients' chances of getting a flu shot and a more than doubling of their likelihood of getting vaccinated against pneumonia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all adults and children get the flu shot every year. ... Full Story | Top |

Among more than 100,000 men and women followed for 22 years, those who drank sugar-sweetened drinks were as much as 23 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who didn't, but the risk was about the same whether the drinks contained caffeine or not, according to the study that appeared in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. ... | German research points way to faster flu vaccines Sunday, Nov 25, 2012 10:03 AM PST LONDON (Reuters) - An experimental vaccine based on a molecule related to DNA protects animals against influenza and may one day offer an ultra-rapid way to develop new shots for humans, German scientists reported on Sunday. Assuming it also works in people, the new approach could allow commercial flu vaccines to be designed and manufactured in weeks rather than months. Making vaccines quickly is critical in fighting flu, particularly during a pandemic when health authorities and drugmakers are in a race to keep up with mutating strains of virus. ... | More than 350 African migrants intercepted off Italy Sunday, Nov 25, 2012 12:31 AM PST ROME (Reuters) - Italian coastguards said they had intercepted and picked up 358 African migrants attempting to reach Italy in two overcrowded vessels on Saturday. Two hundred and thirty-five of the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were travelling in a rickety wooden boat and the other 123 were spotted on a rubber dinghy, said the coastguards. A coastguard spokesman, who was unable to give any information on where the vessels departed from, said the migrants were all in decent health and were being transported to reception centres. ...
