Prosecutors charged ex-chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, former executive vice-president Hisashi Mori and former auditor Hideo Yamada with inflating the company's net worth in financial statements for the fiscal years ended March 2007 and 2008, in violation of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law. ...

Sony set for $642 million investment in Olympus: sources

Reuters - TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp will likely approve a plan this week to invest 50 billion yen ($642 million) in cash-strapped Olympus Corp, becoming its biggest shareholder with around a 10 percent stake, three sources familiar with the deal told Reuters. Sony will set up a joint business with Olympus to develop new medical equipment, and next year will send an executive to join its board of directors, the sources said on condition they were not identified. Sony wants to nurture new businesses, including medical equipment, to increase revenue as it draws back from loss-making televisions. ... Full Story

Morning-after pills available to N.Y. high school students

Many schools around the nation have long made condoms available to students but New York health officials said they believe the city is the first to make hormonal contraceptives available. ... Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There are "troubling indications" some hospitals may be using electronic records to defraud Medicare, the Obama administration said on Monday, promising to prosecute any doctors and hospitals found "gaming the system". U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder warned five hospital-related interest groups of signs of abuse of the Medicare healthcare program administered by the federal government. ... Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Health providers should screen all adults and pregnant women for risky drinking habits, a government-backed expert panel said Monday in new draft recommendations. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines were released along with a summary of past research showing a few brief counseling sessions can help cut excessive drinking in people who aren't full-blown alcoholics. Researchers found that with such interventions, at least one in every ten risky drinkers can be brought back down to what is considered a safe drinking level. ... Full Story

Variation in antibiotic prescribing hints at overuse

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Seniors in the U.S. are prescribed at least one antibiotic each every year, on average - but the rate of prescribing varies quite a bit across the country, a new study finds. In some parts of the country, seniors averaged less than one antibiotic prescription per year, while in others, they received between one and two per year, according to a report in Archives of Internal Medicine. ... Breathing European air shortens lives: report

Reuters - BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Air pollution is shortening lives by almost two years in parts of the European Union, the European Environmental Agency (EEA) said, strengthening the case for a tightening of emissions restrictions in the bloc. Legislation had managed to cut the amount of some toxins belched out by exhaust fumes and chimneys across Europe, according to an EEA report published on Monday. Venture firms see signs of rebirth in life sciences

Reuters - SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Life-sciences and health investing, long shunned by venture-capital investors, is making a comeback. Several venture firms globally have each raised or are raising funds this year in the $200 million to $400 million range dedicated to life sciences, biotech and medicine, while others have raised large, diversified funds with big chunks dedicated to those fields. Venture capitalists are taking that money and pushing it into several life-sciences and health-related fields. IUDs, implants encouraged for teenage girls

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Teenage girls looking for birth control should be encouraged to consider the long-lasting "set and forget" methods, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). In new guidelines, ACOG says IUDs and contraceptive implants should be considered "first-line" birth control options for teenagers. Sanofi to unveil plans for French research shake-up

Reuters - PARIS (Reuters) - French drugmaker Sanofi will reveal on Tuesday how it plans to shake up its French research operations in a cost-cutting drive which unions predict could mean up to 2,500 layoffs. The French government has criticised Sanofi's cutback plans when France has rising unemployment, which is predicted to hit more than 3 million for the first time during the economic crisis, official data may show on Wednesday. Genital cutting tied to later abuse risk

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who underwent genital cutting as young girls may be at increased risk of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from their husband, a study of women in Mali suggests. The study, of nearly 7,900 women, found that 22 percent of those with genital mutilation said they'd been physically abused by a husband or male partner. That compared with 12 percent of women who'd never been subjected to the procedure. Peregrine says lung cancer trial data erroneous, shares sink

Reuters - (Reuters) - Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc on Monday warned of discrepancies in the results of a mid-stage lung cancer trial, the second time in six months the drugmaker has got into trouble over its data, wiping off more than three-quarters of its market value. The drug, bavituximab, is Peregrine's key product and is currently being testing it in multiple clinical trials. Earlier this month, the company's stock climbed 50 percent after Peregrine issued results from the trial, saying the drug doubled survival time in lung cancer patients. ... Full Story
