Former Olympus President and CEO Woodford walks before he attends Olympus Corp's extraordinary shareholders' meeting in TokyoLONDON (Reuters) - Michael Woodford, the ousted chief executive of Olympus , will try to persuade a London judge his embattled former employer fired him because he blew the cover off one of Japan's most high-profile corporate frauds. The five-day hearing, which starts on Monday, will throw the spotlight back onto a $1.7 billion accounting scandal that has cost the camera-to-endoscope maker its board and reputation. Woodford, chief executive for just two weeks before being sacked, is expected to seek up to $60 million in compensation from his former employer, according to the Financial Times. ...

Women get less information on post-cancer fertility: study

Reuters - (Reuters) - Cancer treatment can sometimes lead to infertility, but young women are far less likely than young men to be informed of this, according to a Swedish study. Findings published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that of nearly 500 cancer survivors aged 18 to 45, 80 percent of men surveyed said their doctor had told them their chemotherapy could affect their future fertility. But only 48 percent of women said the same. In addition, only 14 percent of women said they received information on options to preserve their fertility, versus 68 percent of men. ... Full Story

Soy supplement shows no blood pressure benefit: study

Reuters - (Reuters) - Soy-rich diets have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, but soy supplements alone may not do anything for older women's blood pressure, according to a U.S. study. The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to the mixed evidence on the health benefits of soy isoflavones - compounds that are thought to have weak estrogen-like effects in some body tissue. ... Colorado farm linked to listeria outbreak files for bankruptcy

Reuters - DENVER (Reuters) - The Colorado farm that grew cantaloupes linked to a listeria outbreak that killed more than 30 people last year has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, court documents showed. Jensen Farms of Holly, Colorado, listed $2.1 million in assets and more than $2.5 million in liabilities in documents filed on Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver. In its bankruptcy papers, the farm listed numerous wrongful death lawsuits it faces in the wake of the outbreak. ... Full Story

Sanofi's cholesterol drug reports positive test results

Reuters - PARIS (Reuters) - An experimental cholesterol treatment being jointly developed by Regeneron and Sanofi has shown it can lower bad cholesterol levels in difficult-to-treat patients, according to data from a mid-stage study published on Saturday. The treatment, a monoclonal antibody that works by blocking a protein called PCSK9 which preserves high bad cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, is a component of a new type of drug that could become effective in preventing heart attack and stroke. ... Reuters - SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Health-conscious Californians may mostly oppose smoking for its costs to public health and the economy but an aggressive tobacco industry campaign and general anti-tax sentiment may block a measure to raise taxes on smokers. Airwaves in the most populous U.S. state are filling up with advertising for and against Proposition 29, a June 5 ballot measure that would add a $1 tax to a pack of cigarettes, taking the tax to $1.87, mainly to fund medical research on tobacco usage and programs to prevent and control it. ... Clock ticking on Illinois Medicaid, pension reforms

Reuters - (Reuters) - Facing a May 31 deadline, the Illinois General Assembly on Friday raced to pass legislation to stop the state from sinking under pension and Medicaid payments, which account for 39 percent of general fund spending. Both chambers of the Democratic-controlled legislature on Thursday sent Governor Pat Quinn a bill that would slice spending on Medicaid, the joint federal-state healthcare program for the poor, by $1.6 billion by reducing eligibility and provider rates and cutting or eliminating programs. ... Tranzyme GI drug fails second late-stage trial

Reuters - (Reuters) - Tranzyme Pharma said its experimental drug to improve gastrointestinal recovery after surgery failed to meet the main or secondary goals of a second late-stage trial. In March, the company said it would stop development of the drug, ulimorelin, after it failed earlier late-stage study. "These results confirm the findings of the earlier study and support our earlier decision to stop all (new drug application) activities for ulimorelin," the company said in a statement. ... Can kids be sent home right after appendectomy?

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Most children and teens getting their appendix removed could probably go home on the same day they have surgery without facing an increased risk of complications, a new study suggests. Researchers at Miami Children's Hospital tested the theory on more than 200 pediatric appendectomy cases, and the kids who went home after surgery had about the same rates of complications and readmissions as the kids who stayed in the hospital overnight. FBI probes fires at women's clinics in Georgia

Reuters - ATLANTA (Reuters) - The FBI says it is investigating "intentional" fires that erupted this week at two Atlanta-area women's clinics, one of which performs abortions. "FBI-Atlanta is seeking information regarding intentional fires," the agency said in a statement. It said the first of the blazes occurred on Sunday morning after someone broke out the front window of a gynecological office and set a fire inside the building. Tide to change Pods lid over child safety concerns

Reuters - (Reuters) - After at least one child was hospitalized for swallowing its prettily packaged detergent, Procter & Gamble Co said on Friday it will make Tide Pods more difficult to open. A double latch will be put on the lid of Tide Pods tubs and should be in markets in the next couple of weeks, P&G spokesman Paul Fox said on Friday. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) issued a warning last week that people should keep highly concentrated, single-dose packs of detergent high up and out of the reach of children. ...
