Obesity tied to older adults' risk of falls: study
Wed,28 Dec 2011 06:08 PM PST
Reuters -

photo(Reuters) - Obese older adults may be more likely than their thinner peers to suffer a potentially disabling fall -- though the most severely overweight may be somewhat protected from injury, according to a U.S. study. Falls are often seen as a problem for thin, frail older adults, since their bones are especially prone to fractures, but obesity carries its own risks, said researchers whose findings appeared in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. ...

Iowa's moderate Republicans: an edge for Romney?
Wed,28 Dec 2011 03:45 PM PST
Reuters -

photoDES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Iowa's moderate Republicans are a small and dispirited bunch, but they could provide a vital boost for Mitt Romney in the state's tight kickoff presidential contest. While the Republican White House contenders battle for the state's big but badly split bloc of religious conservatives, Iowa's moderates are a forgotten minority who have coalesced around the candidate they consider their only choice: Romney. But it is uncertain whether they will turn out for him at the caucus votes on January 3, when the state kicks off the Republican nominating fight. ...

Wall Street ends 5-day rally on renewed euro-zone concerns
Wed,28 Dec 2011 02:43 PM PST
Reuters -

photoNEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell more than 1 percent on Wednesday after a hefty year-end rally and the S&P 500 erased gains for the year on renewed concerns about the euro zone's financial health. The selloff followed the euro's slide to an 11-month low against the U.S. dollar as regional debt worries prompted a wave of selling, with thin trading exacerbating volatility. "It seems like the weakness in euro, breaking that $1.30 level, really made investors push that 'sell' button," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist with Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati. ...

Poor kids miss out on playtime, pediatricians say
Wed,28 Dec 2011 02:32 PM PST
Reuters -

photoNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children in poor urban neighborhoods need more chances for old-fashioned playtime in their daily lives, says a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). A number of experts have raised concerns that children these days have little time for unstructured play -- which, they say, is important for kids' physical and mental development. The new report follows another from the AAP a few years ago, which argued that U.S. suburban children are "overscheduled" with formal classes and lessons, leaving them little time for simple play. ...

Wed,28 Dec 2011 02:26 PM PST
Reuters - (Reuters) - Actavis Group has reached an $84 million settlement with Texas to resolve civil claims that it defrauded the state's Medicaid program by artificially inflating prices for its generic drugs. Actavis had appealed that verdict, which followed a three-week trial. In announcing the accord with U.S. ... Full Story

Targeting school and home helps cut risky behaviors
Wed,28 Dec 2011 01:35 PM PST
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many interventions aimed at preventing drug use and risky sexual behavior in young people haven't worked so well, suggests a new report which also highlights helpful elements of successful programs. Interventions that did work targeted multiple areas of kids' lives, including the classroom, community and home, teaching healthy decision-making skills related to alcohol, drugs and sex. Those programs often lasted for a few years. "To have multiple effects, you can't just have one hour a day for a few weeks and that's it. ... Full Story

Red meat lovers have more kidney cancer
Wed,28 Dec 2011 01:33 PM PST
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who eat lots of red meat may have a higher risk of some types of kidney cancer, suggests a large U.S. study. Researchers found that middle-aged adults who ate the most red meat were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer than those who ate the least. A higher intake of chemicals found in grilled or barbecued meat was also linked to increased risk of the disease, they reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "Red meat is an important source for iron (and) it has protein," said Dr. ... Full Story

Venezuela's Chavez: did U.S. give Latin American leaders cancer?
Wed,28 Dec 2011 12:09 PM PST
Reuters -

photoCARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speculated on Wednesday that the United States might have developed a way to give Latin American leaders cancer, after Argentina's Cristina Fernandez joined the list of presidents diagnosed with the disease. It was a typically controversial statement by Venezuela's socialist leader, who underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his pelvis. But he stressed that he was not making any accusations, just thinking aloud. "It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ... ...

Exercise doesn't prevent pregnancy-related diabetes
Wed,28 Dec 2011 11:23 AM PST
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Pregnant women who exercised regularly during the second half of their pregnancies did not lower their odds of developing pregnancy-related diabetes in a new clinical trial. Researchers in Norway found that when they randomly assigned 855 pregnant women to either exercise three times a week or to stick with regular prenatal care alone, the exercisers were no less likely to develop gestational diabetes. By the third trimester, seven percent of the exercise group had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, versus six percent of the comparison group. ... Full Story

The Daily Telegraph said the officials have been told to develop a scheme to prevent the sale of alcohol in shops in England at below 40 to 50 pence per unit. That could lead to sharp price rises, particularly for cider and some spirits. ...

Wed,28 Dec 2011 09:48 AM PST
Reuters -

photoNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - About one out of every four parents with small children responds to interventions to help them quit smoking, which is slightly better than the one in five parents who would quit without any special help, according to a new study. Researchers say the results should encourage pediatricians to take advantage of their frequent encounters with parents, and try to get them to start a smoking cessation program. ...
