Reuters - TOKYO (Reuters) - Former Olympus Corp CEO Michael Woodford said he is ready to return to the company but added the decision is up to shareholders, Kyodo news agency reported on Friday. Woodford arrived at Olympus headquarters in Tokyo earlier on Friday in a boardroom showdown a month after he was fired and went public with suspicions about the company's past M&A deals. Cost agency backs BMS, Pfizer anti-clot drug

Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's healthcare cost-effectiveness watchdog has recommended Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer's new pill Eliquis for preventing blood clots after hip and knee surgery, following a fast-track review. The final draft guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) comes just six months after Eliquis was licensed in Europe, marking an unusually rapid decision by the agency that determines which drugs are paid for on the state health service. ... Ex-Olympus CEO Woodford: No surprise if crime link to scandal

Reuters - TOKYO (Reuters) - Former Olympus Corp CEO Michael Woodford said on Thursday he would not be surprised if there was "some criminality involved" in an accounting scandal at the company, as speculation persists of a link between dubious M&A deals and organized crime. Woodford also told an audience of business executives in Tokyo that he had a "dream team" at Olympus he could employ to run the company if he returned as chief executive. Olympus fired Woodford as CEO on October 14, saying he did not understand Japanese culture. Woodford said his dismissal was due to questioning dubious M&A payments. ... Full Story

Gaddafi son needs surgery on gangrenous fingers: doctor

photoZINTAN/TRIPOLI, Libya (Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam needs surgery to remove gangrenous flesh from a severed thumb and finger which if not treated could make him seriously ill, a doctor who examined him told Reuters on Thursday. Saif al-Islam has been nursing injuries to his right hand which he says were sustained during a NATO airstrike weeks ago. No further details have been available on the state of his heavily bandaged thumb, index and middle fingers. ...

Migraines may raise depression risk: study

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who get painful migraine headaches may be at a higher risk for developing clinical depression, suggests a new study from Canada. The research, published in the journal Headache, also hints that the relationship may go both ways, and people with clinical depression could have a higher risk of developing migraines, but that finding could have been due to chance, the researchers say. ... Moderate drinking tied to lower diabetes risk

Following more than 80,000 women over 26 years, researchers found that those who ate a diet high in refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, potatoes and sugary drinks, had a 30 percent lower risk of developing diabetes than women with similar eating habits who didn't drink alcohol. ...

Aspirin not worth risks for healthy women: study

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Aspirin is a bad bargain for healthy women trying to stave off heart attacks or strokes, although it's commonly used for that purpose, according to Dutch researchers. In a new report, they say 50 women will need to take the medication for 10 years for just one to be helped -- and that's assuming they are at high risk to begin with. UK switches to Merck's Gardasil for HPV vaccination

Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is to stop using GlaxoSmithKline's cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix from next September and will instead offer girls Merck & Co's rival product Gardasil. The move underscores Gardasil's lead in a $1 billion-plus worldwide market for vaccines that protect against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer. Olympus shares jump more than 11 percent, delisting fears fade

photoTOKYO (Reuters) - Embattled Olympus Corp jumped more than 11 percent on Thursday for its third day of gains, with investors appearing less worried that the stock would be delisted by the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The scandal-hit company said on Monday a third-party panel investigating an accounting scandal found no evidence of funds from M&A deals flowing to organized crime syndicates. Olympus was trading 8 percent higher at 941 yen after earlier jumping more than 11 percent in morning trade. The stock was the heaviest-traded share by turnover on the main board. ...

Ontario cuts growth targets, says budget on track

Pozen sells migraine drug's U.S. rights to Canada fund

Reuters - (Reuters) - Pozen Inc sold its right to receive American royalties from its migraine drug to Canada's national pension fund, sending the pharmaceutical company's shares up as much as 32 percent in extended trade. The company received $75 million for the deal and would get a fifth of any royalties received by the fund, CPPIB Credit Investments, from April 1, 2018, Pozen said in a filing. GlaxoSmithKline holds the license to develop and market Trexmet in the United States, and Pozen has the right to develop and market a lower dose of the drug outside the country. ... Full Story
