Israeli settlers launch enclave in Palestinian business hub
Sunday, May 04, 2014 12:39 AM PDT
Palestinian students hold a photo shoot in front of a post office building in East JerusalemBy Allyn Fisher-Ilan JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The smell of fresh paint wafts through the domed lobby of the latest Israeli arrival in East Jerusalem - a Jewish seminary in a bustling commercial area in the same building as a post office serving thousands of Palestinians every day. Palestinians and Israeli critics worry the placement of the academy in such a central location is asking for trouble in East Jerusalem, which has stayed largely trouble-free in recent years compared to the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank, and which Palestinians hope will be the capital of a future state. Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem after its capture in a 1967 war has never been recognized, meaning most of the world views Israeli enclaves there as illegal settlements. But even when Israel froze construction temporarily in 2010, it always insisted the moratorium exclude East Jerusalem, which it views as an integral part of the country.

U.S. Watches While Ukraine BurnsAs violence worsened in Ukraine over the weekend, U.S. lawmakers appeared on the Sunday talk shows to call for new and harsher sanctions on Russia. China's 'ordinary' billionaire behind grand Nicaragua canal plan
Sunday, May 04, 2014 03:06 PM PDT
Chinese telecom tycoon Wang speaks during an interview with Reuters in Xinwei Telecom's headquarters in BeijingBy Matthew Miller BEIJING (Reuters) - Wang Jing, the enigmatic businessman behind Nicaragua's $50 billion Interoceanic Grand Canal, shrugs off scepticism about how a little-known entrepreneur can be driving a huge transcontinental project, insisting he's not an agent of the Beijing government. "You believe there are people from the Chinese government in the background providing support. Why, in the end, is only Wang Jing out front?" High-ranking Chinese officials including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and former leaders Jiang Zemin and Wen Jiabao have all visited the state-connected wireless communication technologies company Wang took control of four years ago. Wang, whose entrepreneurism went mostly unnoticed in China and elsewhere before last year's Nicaragua announcement and a subsequent $3 billion Black Sea port development plan, has not helped matters by refusing to talk in detail about himself or broad swathes of his career.

In this photo taken Wednesday, April 30, 2014, Jewish ultra-Orthodox military captain Moshe Prigan, 30, lays phylacteries for his morning prayer at home in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish town of Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv, Israel. Prigan doesn't just serve in the military, he also recruits other ultra-Orthodox Jewish men to enlist, something the cloistered community has traditionally avoided doing. The issue of military service is at the core of a cultural war over the place of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israeli society today. (AP Photo/Oded Balilty)BNEI BRAK, Israel (AP) — Moshe Prigan starts his day off just like many other men in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak with his morning prayer. There is no doubt that Russian Special Forces and other troops are in Ukraine; Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted as much. There's also little doubt that Russian weapons are in the hands of the pro-Russia protestors clashing with Ukraine's army.
