The fate of a Christmas concert due to be held in Valencia's opera house was to be decided Friday after parts of the building's cladding fell in high winds. The music venue was designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava and generated headlines in 2006 when it was revealed that its construction had cost more than euro 332 million ($455.6 million), a sum that was four times the original budget. Elsewhere, Spanish authorities are blaming high winds, torrential rain and crashing waves for the deaths of two bathers in the Canary Islands, the rescue of three others from the sea and temporary closing of an opera house due to falling masonry.(AP Photo/ Fernando Bustamante, File)MADRID (AP) — High winds, torrential rain and crashing waves killed two people and temporarily shut a Spanish opera house, while blustery weather elsewhere in Europe delayed trains and caused severe flooding, authorities said Friday.

The Most Important Climate Change Stories of 2013
Friday, Dec 27, 2013 08:47 AM PST
Global warming was hot news this year—literally. Be it the slow creep of the fossil fuel divestment program across America, so-called climate hawks flexing their muscles at the polls in November, or President Obama dragging his feet on a Keystone XL pipeline decision, climate change stories at times dominated the news cycle in 2013, the seventh hottest year since record keeping began in 1850. A protester demonstrates during a rally denouncing Japanese Prime Minister Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine outside the Japanese Embassy in SeoulBy Linda Sieg TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to a shrine for war dead outraged China and South Korea, and also upset Washington and his government coalition partner - but he appears confident the alliances and his popularity will not be affected. On Thursday, Abe became the first Japanese premier in seven years to pay his respects at Yasukuni Shrine, where Japanese leaders convicted as war criminals by an Allied tribunal after World War Two are honored along with those who died in battle. The shrine is seen by critics as a symbol of Japan's past military aggression. Abe, however, is a staunch conservative and the pilgrimage is part of his mission to recast Japan's wartime past in a less apologetic light and revive national pride.
