Cricket-Anderson breaks partnership as New Zealand close on win
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 06:39 PM PST
(Updates at tea) Dec 6 (Reuters) - Left-arm medium pacer Corey Anderson broke a 122-run partnership between Darren Bravo and Narsingh Deonarine shortly before tea to reinvigorate New Zealand's push to victory in the first test against West Indies on Friday. Anderson got the ball to bounce and tail slightly away from the left-handed Deonarine, who feathered a catch to wicketkeeper BJ Watling and was dismissed for 52 about 15 minutes before the tea break. Bravo was 146 not out while Denesh Ramdin was on four as the visitors reached 314 for five at tea, still needing another 86 runs to make the hosts bat again on the fourth day of the match at University Oval in Dunedin. The pitch was providing little assistance to the bowlers and was still a good wicket for batting, with Deonarine and Bravo's partnership proving frustrating for the home side.

Cricket-Captain Clarke hits ton to take test away from England
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 06:27 PM PST
By Ian Ransom ADELAIDE, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Australia captain Michael Clarke renewed his love affair with Adelaide Oval by scoring a sublime century to push Australia to a commanding 389-5 at lunch on day two of the second Ashes test on Friday. Clarke was unbeaten on 109 at the break with his vice captain Bradd Haddin alongside him on 57 after the pair punished a flagging England attack to add 116 runs to the overnight total in an unbroken stand of 132. Having dropped three catches on Thursday's opening day, two of which would have dismissed Clarke and Haddin, England's fielders let their bowlers down again on an overcast morning beside the River Torrens. Haddin could well have been run out for 18 after being called through for a cheeky single by Clarke but was let off by a poor throw back to the stumps by Michael Carberry, who also spilled a simple catch just before stumps on Thursday to save the wicketkeeper.

Golf-Holder McDowell 'quite happy' with Sherwood start
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 06:04 PM PST
By Mark Lamport-Stokes THOUSAND OAKS, California, Dec 5 (Reuters) - California has been a successful hunting ground for Graeme McDowell over the last four years and he was happy enough with his start to the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge on Thursday. Seeking his third victory in the elite event hosted by Tiger Woods, McDowell launched his title defence with a level-par 72 to end the opening round in a tie for sixth, five strokes behind pace-setting American Zach Johnson. "Generally I was quite happy the way I hit the ball," McDowell told reporters after offsetting four birdies with four bogeys on a sun-drenched but chilly day at Sherwood Country Club in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. It offers you a lot of chances if you play decent." The Northern Irishman clinched the World Challenge for the first time with a playoff victory over Woods in 2010, six months after landing his maiden major title in the U.S. Open held at Pebble Beach.

Golf-Poor putting costs Woods two shots at Sherwood
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 05:39 PM PST
By Mark Lamport-Stokes THOUSAND OAKS, California, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Two short missed putts bookended a grinding round for Tiger Woods as the tournament host opened with a one-under-par 71 at the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge on Thursday. In pursuit of his sixth victory this year, the American world number one drove the ball well but was not as sharp with his irons and his putting as he finished up four strokes behind the pace-setting Zach Johnson in an elite field of 18. Woods, who has won his event a record five times, missed a three-footer for par on his opening hole and a birdie putt from a similar distance at the par-four last to end the opening round with just four players ahead of him. "I felt like I hit the ball decent today," the 14-time major champion said after missing only two fairways at Sherwood Country Club with a new driver in his bag.

South African rugby mourns 'miracle' worker Mandela
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 04:39 PM PST
File photo of former South African President Nelson Mandela at the Nelson Annual Mandela lecture in Kliptown(Reuters) - South African rugby paid tribute to the "miracle" performed by Nelson Mandela in uniting his country, partly through his embrace of the Springbok rugby team at the 1995 World Cup, after the death of the former president on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize winner won over many whites when he donned the jersey of South Africa's national rugby team - once a symbol of white supremacy - at the rugby World Cup final in Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium. "All of our lives are poorer today at the extinguishing of the great beacon of light and hope that led the way for our country through the transition to democracy," Oregan Hoskins, President of the South African Rugby Union, said in a statement. "Through his extraordinarily vision, he was able to use the 1995 Rugby World Cup as an instrument to help promote nation building just one year after South Africa's historic first democratic election.

NBA-National Basketball Association roundup
Thursday, Dec 05, 2013 04:25 PM PST
Dec 5 (The Sports Xchange) - Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose addressed reporters Thursday for the first time since undergoing season-ending knee surgery on Nov. 22, vowing to possibly return in time for the playoffs. Rose, 25, tore his right meniscus on a simple backcut in Portland against the Trail Blazers. "If I'm healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course I'll be out there playing, but if it's something totally different and the outcome is not how I would want it to be, it's no need." - - Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will not play Friday against the Sacramento Kings. Bryant practiced twice this week and could still return Sunday, when the Toronto Raptors visit Staples Center.
