The victory, completed before tea on day four, pushed Australia to a 4-0 series lead and the prospect of sweeping England in the fifth and final test in Sydney seven years after Ricky Ponting's team whitewashed the tourists in 2006-07. Needing quick wickets to have any chance of salvaging pride at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, England suffered a major blow when their captain Alastair Cook put down two catches at first slip in the first half-hour that would have removed Rogers for 19 and his opening partner David Warner for 22. | Cricket-Australia on course for big win over toothless England Saturday, Dec 28, 2013 05:52 PM PST By Ian Ransom MELBOURNE, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Chris Rogers scored his fourth half-century of the Ashes series to push Australia within 88 runs of victory at lunch on the fourth day of the fourth test on Sunday, after being dropped in the slips by England captain Alastair Cook. Needing quick wickets to have any chance of salvaging pride at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, England suffered a major blow when Cook put down two catches at first slip in the first half hour that would have removed both opening batsmen. Though David Warner was dismissed cheaply for 25, Rogers combined with Shane Watson to guide Australia to 143-1 at the break, the hosts having added 113 runs in the session to punish a loose and resigned effort from England's bowlers. Having resumed needing 201 runs for victory, Rogers added only one run before nicking a Stuart Broad delivery behind and a lunging Cook put the chance down after wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow failed to move for the catch that was rightfully his. | Soccer-Bruce purrs over hirsuite Huddlestone's Hull masterclass Saturday, Dec 28, 2013 05:15 PM PST While Tom Huddlestone's first goal for Hull City means a trip to the barbers for the midfielder this week, manager Steve Bruce thinks his part in Saturday's 6-0 win over Fulham could help put him on the plane to Brazil with England next year. Former Manchester United stalwart Bruce struggled to recall a more complete midfield performance than that Huddlestone, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, produced in the Premier League rout at KC Stadium. "The lads stood and applauded Tom when he walked into the dressing room and that doesn't happen often," Bruce told the Hull Daily Mail. "I don't often pick out individuals but I don't think I've witnessed a performance as good as I've just seen from Tom "He gave a masterclass of how to play in midfield. Full Story | Top |
