Cricket-Clarke confident Harris will be fit for third Ashes test
Wednesday, Dec 11, 2013 07:59 PM PST
By Nick Mulvenney PERTH, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Ryan Harris bowled in the nets at the WACA on Thursday and Australia captain Michael Clarke was confident the paceman would be fit to face England when the third Ashes test begins on Friday. The hosts could recapture the Ashes with victory at the WACA after dominant wins in the opening two tests in the five-match series in Brisbane and Adelaide. Injuries have severely restricted Harris's test career and an ongoing knee problem is threatening to prevent Australia from naming the same team for a third test in a row. "I'm hopeful that everyone will come up, I think there's the obvious one in Ryan-o, who bowled today, and we'll see how he pulls up," Clarke told reporters at the WACA.

Wednesday, Dec 11, 2013 07:03 PM PST
By Luis Ampuero BUENOS AIRES, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Argentina's Lanus scored two first half goals to beat Ponte Preta of Brazil 2-0 on Wednesday and win the regional Copa Sudamericana 3-1 on aggregate. Paraguayan defender Victor Ayala put the home side one up in the 24th minute and striker Ismael Blanco, man of the match, increased their lead at the Ciudad de Lanus stadium in the second minute of added time in the first half. It was the third title won by Lanus, a modest club from the Buenos Aires outskirts, after the now defunct Copa Conmebol in 1996 and the 2007 Apertura championship, their only Argentine league title. "This title cost us a lot of sacrifice, we are a squad that wanted to win things and we achieved that, it's a great joy for the club," Lanus goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin told reporters.

Arsenal's Coach Wenger leaves the pich at the half-time of the the Champions League soccer match against Naples at San Paolo stadium in NaplesArsenal's lunchtime game at Manchester City on Saturday could be a defining one for their Premier League title hopes, even if Arsene Wenger has greeted that idea with a typically Gallic shrug. The Gunners have a comfortable cushion over second-placed Liverpool, who travel in the opposite direction on Sunday for a clash in North London with sixth-placed Tottenham Hotspur (11 a.m. ET), and Chelsea. "We are five points ahead and, overall, the Premier League is a marathon," said Wenger, speaking before his side progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League despite a 2-0 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday that left them facing a potentially tricky last-16 clash. "We will be in the race no matter what happens."
