S.Africa's right still fears post-Mandela apocalypse
Wednesday, Dec 25, 2013 10:17 PM PST
In this file photo, supporters of the white supremacist Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) are seen in Ventersdorp, on May 22, 2012In South Africa, right-wing prophesies that Nelson Mandela's death will be followed by a racial apocalypse refuse to be quashed by events. So engrained was the idea of a "Night of the Long Knives" that it even seeped into mainstream thinking. When nothing happened after South Africa's first black president drew his last breath on December 5, or after his burial 10 days later, most were unsurprised, but for some it was nothing more than apocalypse deferred. The belief that one day whites would be slaughtered en masse is tenacious and can be traced back to the earliest white settlers on the tip of Africa.

Shoppers or shippers – who's to blame for ruining Christmas?Online shopping can be both a blessing and a curse during the holiday season. On the one hand, we can avoid all those pesky lines and slow-moving consumers at brick-and-mortar retailers. Thursday, Dec 26, 2013 02:51 AM PST
A boy plays on a street as U.S. Army soldiers of 82nd Airborne Division, patrol during a mission in Zahri district of Kandahar provinceBy Missy Ryan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For years, U.S. officials have pointed to the improvements in the everyday lives of Afghans made possible by billions of dollars in aid from the United States and elsewhere. In Afghanistan, people now live 20 years longer on average than under Taliban rule, they say; The specter of an abrupt departure of all U.S. and NATO soldiers from Afghanistan at the end of next year now imperils these gains, they warn, and endangers progress on the massive development challenges that remain. Unless the Obama administration can persuade Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sign a security pact that would permit a modest U.S. force to remain beyond 2014, the United States is almost certain to drastically scale back aid to Afghanistan.
