U.S. security agencies say Android mobile main target for malware

Android was a target for 79 percent of all malware threats to mobile operating systems in 2012 with text messages representing about half of the malicious applications, according to the study from the government agencies, which was published by Public Intelligence website. ...

Avago sees strong quarter ahead of new iPhone launch

New York Times Co spokeswoman Eileen Murphy tweeted on Tuesday that the "issue is most likely the result of a malicious external attack," based on an initial assessment. This is the second time the Times has experienced problems with its website in two weeks. On August 14, the site was down for several hours, an outage likely related to a scheduled maintenance update that occurred within seconds of the website's going down. ...

But U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan suggested a final injunction would be narrower than what the U.S. Department of Justice has been seeking, and would not restrict Apple's agreements with suppliers of other types of content such as movies, music and TV shows. ...

TiVo posts profit after patent lawsuit settlement

(Reuters) - Video recorder pioneer TiVo Inc posted a quarterly profit as it gained $490 million from a patent litigation settlement with Google Inc's Motorola Mobility and Cisco Systems Inc. Tivo reported a net profit of $268.9 million, or $1.96 per share, in the second quarter, compared with a net loss of $27.7 million, or 23 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 53 percent to $100.1 million. TiVo said in June it settled a patent lawsuit with Motorola Mobility, which had accused it of infringing patents for digital video recorders. ...

Nissan plans to begin selling self-driving cars by 2020

The Japanese automaker said it plans to offer "multiple, commercially viable" vehicles that are capable of autonomous operation without driver input. The self-driving vehicles will be sold "at realistic prices for consumers," the company said at a media event in Irvine, California. Nissan said its goal is to offer autonomous cars "across the model range within two vehicle generations" - about 10-12 years after the projected 2020 launch. ...

China approves Mediatek, MStar merger with conditions

TAIPEI (Reuters) - China's Ministry of Commerce approved the $3.8 billion merger between Taiwanese chip designers Mediatek Inc and MStar Semiconductor Inc with conditions on Tuesday on worries about potential monopoly in the TV chip market. The Chinese regulator said the two companies cannot collaborate in the LCD television chip segment and MStar's subsidiary that operates the LCD TV chip business will have to remain an independent entity. Only the smartphone chip and other business related to wireless communications will be merged into Mediatek. ...
