North Carolina governor signs law for tougher abortion clinic rules

By Karen Brooks (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law on Monday new requirements for clinics performing abortions that supporters say will protect women's safety and opponents say will restrict access to the procedure. The new law places sweeping new restrictions on abortion clinics, including a requirement doctors be present when abortions are performed. It also bans publicly funded health insurance programs from paying for most abortions, and authorizes state health officials to design rules for increased safety standards for abortion clinics. ...

Judge blocks one restriction on Wisconsin abortion doctors

A study by the leading autism expert Simon Baron-Cohen at Cambridge University's Autism Research Centre found that compared to typical girls, those with anorexia have an above-average number of autistic traits. ...

UK cost agency turns down new Roche breast cancer drug

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said on Tuesday it could not be sure of Perjeta's benefits, adding that not even the manufacturer estimated it would be considered cost-effective for the National Health Service. The teen, a goalie whose name has been withheld because of his age, became upset and punched the referee in the face after he penalized the teen for shoving an opposing player during a game in suburban Salt Lake City this past April. ...

NZ's Fonterra says has no notice of Chinese action on food scare

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, said on Monday it had received no official notice from Chinese authorities over action against dairy products that might be contaminated with a bacterium which can cause botulism. In a statement to the NZ stock exchange it said it had yet to hear about the official Chinese response to the food scare. "As far as Fonterra is aware, the New Zealand Government is working with Chinese authorities to determine the scope of the reaction, and no official notification has been received," it said in the statement. ...

Medicines Co's hemostasis drug effective in late: stage study

(Reuters) - Medicines Co said its experimental drug to help stop bleeding during surgery was found effective in a late-stage study, sending its shares up more than 2 percent. The drug, which met all the main and secondary goals, is a dry powder topical formulation that Medicines Co acquired through its purchase of Profibrix in June. The drug, Fibrocaps, was tested on 719 patients in four surgical indications of spinal surgery, hepatic resection, soft tissue dissection and vascular surgery. Shares of the company rose 2.4 percent to $32.24 in after-hours trading on Monday. ...

Sri Lanka suspends New Zealand milk powder imports

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka has ordered an immediate suspension of New Zealand milk powder imports and recalled the products from the market following China's import ban over botulism fears, a government official said on Monday. Dharma Wanninayake, a spokesman for the island nation's health ministry, said the director general of health services had instructed customs to temporarily halt the clearance of milk powder from New Zealand.
