San Francisco area residents were bracing for a second possible strike this summer, sleeping at friends' and relatives' homes to be closer to jobs and making alternative travel arrangements just hours before a midnight deadline to reach a agreement on a labor contract. ... Vietnam orders recall of Fonterra milk powder  Sunday, Aug 04, 2013 08:06 PM PDT HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam has ordered an immediate recall and halt of circulation of a milk powder manufactured by Fonterra after New Zealand authorities said some of the protein concentrate produced there was found to be contaminated. Abbott Laboratories S.A office in Vietnam, the owner of the milk powder manufactured by Fonterra in New Zealand, will conduct the recall and report the result by August 9, the Health Ministry-run Vietnam Foodstuff Safety Department said in a statement on its website (vfa.gov.vn). ... Israel to launch limited active polio virus campaign in south  Sunday, Aug 04, 2013 12:32 PM PDT JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said on Sunday it was launching a campaign to administer the active polio vaccine to children in its southern region after tests detected at least 1,000 carriers of the virus in that area, though none were found to be ill with the disease. The Health Ministry said it was recommending that children born after January 2004, but not younger than two months, report to publicly-funded clinics to be administered oral drops of a weakened active virus vaccine beginning on Monday. ... Republican Ryan wary of shutdown strategy on Obamacare  Sunday, Aug 04, 2013 11:24 AM PDT By Caren Bohan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Influential Republican congressman Paul Ryan disagreed on Sunday with the idea of using the threat of a government shutdown as a means of trying to get rid of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law known as "Obamacare." Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee and a former vice presidential candidate, said he strongly backs the goal of repealing Obamacare but added there were other, more effective ways of achieving it than by refusing to approve any government funding bill that includes money for the program. ... India partly revokes Roche cancer drug patent  Sunday, Aug 04, 2013 03:20 AM PDT ZURICH (Reuters) - India has partly revoked patents granted to Roche Holding AG for its breast cancer drug Herceptin, a spokesman for the drugmaker confirmed on Sunday. Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag reported that the Kolkata Patent Office had lifted divisional patents for Herceptin on July 17 on the grounds they had not been properly submitted. "I can confirm that the Assistant Controller of Patents at the Kolkata Patent Office has revoked divisional patents of Herceptin and that we are now considering the further course of action," a spokesman for Roche said. ... China bans New Zealand milk powder imports on botulism scare: NZ trade minister  Sunday, Aug 04, 2013 03:09 AM PDT By Naomi Tajitsu WELLINGTON (Reuters) - China has halted imports of all milk powder from New Zealand and Australia, New Zealand's trade minister said on Sunday, after bacteria that can cause botulism found in some dairy products raised food safety concerns that threatened its $9.4 billion annual dairy trade.
