FTC nominee says to recuse himself on Google issues for two years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican law professor nominated to the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday he would recuse himself from the agency's investigations into Google for two years to avoid any possible conflicts of interest. The FTC is investigating Google for allegedly breaking antitrust law, although the probe could well be done before Joshua Wright is confirmed to the commission. Wright has served as director of research at the International Center for Law and Economics, a group that received funding from Google. ...

Intel sold the bonds in a range of maturities from five years to 30 years, according to IFR, a Thomson Reuters unit. Court rejects Verizon challenge to roaming rule

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld a 2011 rule that requires mobile data providers to offer roaming agreements to their competitors, rejecting a challenge brought by Verizon Wireless. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had sufficient authority to issue the rule, and the rule does not qualify as an unfair government seizure, the appeals court said in a unanimous decision. Roaming agreements are critical for small regional carriers who would have trouble attracting customers if they were unable to offer service outside of their region. ...

Yahoo did not disclose the financial terms of its acquisition of OnTheAir, but said the team would be joining Yahoo's mobile group. A Yahoo spokeswoman said that Yahoo had not plans to offer OnTheAir's existing product, which lets Web users host live video conversations and was launched in March. Chinese man avoids prison for New York Fed cyber theft

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Chinese computer programmer was spared prison time and sentenced to six months of house arrest on Tuesday after he admitted to stealing millions of dollars of software code from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Bo Zhang, 33, had pleaded guilty in May, after telling investigators that he had downloaded the code to an external hard drive and taken it home. He also pleaded guilty to a separate count of immigration fraud. Zhang's case had raised security concerns among congressional investigators and others that the New York Fed might be vulnerable to cyber attacks. ...

EMC, VMware to merge data and cloud app assets into new group

(Reuters) - EMC Corp, the world's leading maker of corporate data storage equipment, and its publicly-traded subsidiary, software maker VMware Inc, are planning to merge their data analytics and cloud application assets, EMC said on its website. EMC said on Tuesday the companies expect to combine a number of divisions into the new group - called the Pivotal Initiative - by the second quarter of 2013 and said the specific operational structure will be determined then. Paul Maritz, EMC's Chief Strategy Officer, will head the group, EMC said. An EMC spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the plans. ...

IAC/InterActiveCorp says no plan to bid for Cupid

LONDON (Reuters) - IAC/InterActiveCorp , a U.S.-based holding company for search, dating and media websites, said on Tuesday it had no plans to bid for UK-listed online dating firm Cupid . The response follows market rumors in recent weeks that it could be preparing to make a bid of around 250 million pounds ($402.4 million). "IAC/InterActiveCorp is not considering a bid for Cupid," a spokeswoman for the U.S. firm told Reuters. Goldman Sachs downgrades IAC to sell on rising competition

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs downgraded Internet holding company IAC/InterActive Corp to "sell" from "neutral" on increasing competition in the search business. The company's shares fell as much as 10 percent to $42.56 on the Nasdaq on Tuesday morning. Goldman said IAC is facing rising competition from AOL Inc and Demand Media Inc, which compete with IAC's business of buying search ads directing users to similar search result pages on Ask.com. The brokerage expects higher competition to hurt IAC's revenue and margins. It cut its price target on the stock to $42 from $53. ...
